Teriek,

For you consideration:

Kiss Me Kate (1953)
An ex-husband and wife team star in a musical version of 'The Taming of the Shrew'; off-stage, the production is troublesome with ex-lovers' quarrels and a gangster looking for some money owed to them.

Please Don't Eat the Daisies (1960)
University drama professor Laurence Mackay and his wife Kate Mackay prefer the quiet of home life - however quiet theirs can be living in a New York City apartment with four rambunctious adolescent and/or infant sons and a sheepdog - than the high life often associated with the New York theater. That is why they plan to move to the country whenever they can find a suitable house. Their lives have the potential to change when Larry becomes a theater critic for one of the big New York City newspapers, meaning that he, along with his six colleagues at the other big New York papers, control what stays and what goes on Broadway by their critiques. ...

They are force to move to a run down country home in Hooton, New York, Kate tries to carve out a new life for their family. Kate participates in a local charity theater production. She asks Alfred, a playwright and family friend, for a new play to mount. Alfred provides Kate with a play that Laurence Mackay wrote, but considered to be a poor play. Laurence Mackay eventually finds out that his play has been adapted against his wishes.

Critic's Choice (1963)
Parker Ballantine is a New York theater critic and his wife writes a play that may or may not be very good. Now Parker must either get out of reviewing the play or cause the breakup of his marriage.

Babes in Arms (1939)
Mickey and Patsi put on a show, not a play. This may not qualify as a result.

Mickey Moran, a talented singer and musician, son of a veteran from the show business. Mickey has a partner, Patsi Barton, a pretty girl and also a very talented singer. One day, a big opportunity arrives for Mickey, a big contract to set up his own show. However, things don't go well, and in order to avoid being sent to a work farm, he'll improvise a show in the country, despite the awful weather conditions. Patsi's in love with Mickey, he loves her too, but for him the show must go on, and his big dream maybe will come true: formally stage his play in a big scenario, with a huge production.

Teriek,

I really like your suggestion.

You may find other films that meet your criteria with this search:
http://www.imdb.com/search/keyword?keywords=theatre-production

Here are other films from that search which may meet your criteria:

Finding Neverland (2004)
The story of J.M. Barrie's friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan. The play Peter Pan is shown in part throughout the film.

Clouds of Sils Maria (2014)
A film star comes face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself while starring in a revival of the play that launched her career.

Camp (2003)
After a series of Broadway flops, songwriter Bert Hanley (Dixon) goes to work at a musical camp for young performers. Inspired by the kids, he finds an opportunity to regain success by staging an altogether new production.

De-Lovely (2004)
Inspecting a magical biographical stage musical, composer Cole Porter reviews his life and career with his wife, Linda.

Slings and Arrows (2003–2006)
In the fictional town of New Burbage, legendary theatrical madman Geoffrey Tennant returns to the New Burbage Theatre Festival, the site of his greatest triumph and most humiliating failure, to assume the artistic directorship after the sudden death of his mentor, Oliver Welles. When Geoffrey arrives he finds that Oliver is still there, in spirit anyway, and with his guidance (and often in spite of it) Geoffrey attempts to reconcile with his past while wrestling the festival back from the marketing department. Despite a bitter leading lady, a clueless leading man, and a scheming general manager, he manages to stage a remarkable production of Hamlet -- the play that drove him mad.

Stage Door (1937)
A chronicle of the ambitions, dreams, and disappointments of aspiring actresses who all live in the same boarding house.

The Pirate (1948)
A girl is engaged to the local richman, but meanwhile she has dreams about the legendary pirate Macoco. A traveling singer falls in love with her and to impress her he poses as the pirate.

Serafin pleads for one last performance for the Viceroy. During the performance, Manuela discovers that the Mayor is the real Macoco, and she helps Serafin bait him into revealing himself as the real pirate.

In the final scene, Manuela and Serafin perform "Be A Clown" in some new town, with the real Macoco presumably executed, and the two actors happily in love.

Star! (1968)
A musical biography of Gertrude Lawrence, who led a hustling and bustling life on the stage.

Cosi (1996)
Lewis is a young Sydney amateur theater director at his first experience: he is offered a job with a Governmental program for the rehabilitation of mentally ill patients in a Sydney institution for mentally ill. His project is overrun by one of the patients Roy who wants to put on stage Cosi Fan Tutte (Mozart). None of the patients in the cast is able to sing and none of them knows Italian which is the language of the libretto. Through a lot of difficulties Lewis and his cast develop a deep understanding. The play smartly adapted for the unusual cast is finally produced: lots of unforeseen situations solved 'a la crazy way'but indeed brilliantly. Great success and sad farewell of the director from his cast.

Salome's Last Dance (1988)
Set in France Oscar Wilde (so it appears) visits a local theatre and is surprised by their retelling of his own work ""Salome'" the story line then digresses in to a VERY twisted portrayal of his work preformed by the local brothel and what can only be described as rejects from the local community theatre. Just when you think it's hit rock bottom it reaches for a new low you didn't think possible and begins to dig add and yet the music continues to dig this in to an ever deepening pit from which you will never get your time back.

The Puppetmaster (1993)
In the first half of this century, young Li Tienlu joines a travelling puppet theatre and subsequently makes a career as one of Taiwan's leading puppeteers. During World War II the Japanese rulers of Taiwan use the traditional Chinese puppet theatre for their war propaganda. Only after the war street theatres start playing again.

Food of Love (1997)
A group of ex-university students reunite to perform a Shakespeare play in a quaint English village.

8 Days to Premiere (2008)
Vilma is a female prompter at a theater-production of "Romeo and Juliet". She's used to remain in the background, but when the female leading actress injures herself, Vilma must take on the role of Juliet in the theater-piece. With only a few days to premiere, she's pulled into a love affair with her actor-opponent who plays Romeo. During the last days before the premiere of the theater-play she meets two young ghosts who appears from an old sofa.

Teriek,

This has turned out to be a very interesting poll suggestion. I'm currently inclined to vote for Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden.

Thanks. The title Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden calls to the viewer in and of itself. I'm leaning toward Raymond Carver's What We Talk About When We Talk About Love from Birdman because how crazy it was during the actual film.

Teriek,

Did you make your list private? I'm getting a 404 (page not found error) when I click on the link to your list: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls069715971/

I hope you did not delete your list. I considered your poll suggestion promising.

Can't connect to your list so some of this might be moot but...

I don't remember a play in Midnight and I saw the movie and read the book. Can you remind me?

Cabaret wasn't a specific play, it was a stage act. Same with The Birdcage

I second Cosi.

FYC:
Midsummer Night's Dream - Dead Poets Society
Stage Beauty - Othello
Alice in Wonderland - Phoebe in Wonderland
The Playboys - Othello and Gone with the Wind

REVISED QUESTION:

Ooh! Phantom of the Opera! I know it's about an opera house and operas, but they're a type of play. You should include a version, and probably list the others so as to let people know you didn't forget the rest of the pack. I liked the '04 version best.

I have added the Phantom of the Opera (Joel Schumacher's 2004 version). Operas would qualify as a type of play, which has also prompted me to include ballets. This will allow for the inclusion of Black Swan due to its "Swan Lake" performance.

You stated I should "probably list the others." Do you mean list the other versions of Phantom of the Opera?

I actually didn't see it as being something selected because its about stage plays, and I figured the featured polls were more popular, immediate, eye-catching stuff. I'm surprised, especially after how long ago it went live.

I've yet to figure out what makes a poll "feature-worthy."

It wasn't selected, so you couldn't see it. In fact, I didn't even mention that I made a similar poll when I saw yours because I thought they didn't overlap (play within a movie / stage-themed movies), in fact, our lists had a lot in common, but never mind, I'm just trying desperately to get a poll in the homepage and it made me sad to see that I came close to it theme-wise.
