Live Poll: Best Spike Lee Joint

Call him controversial, biased or divisive, now Oscar-winner Spike Lee have never stopped to be relevant ever since he set the template of his groundbreaking art with She's Gotta Have It (1986).

He wasn't always political and made many heart-warming drama/comedies but his main work explored with a critical eye and an uncompromising spirit eye the social climate in the United States in the late fifty years: the 60s with Malcolm X (1992), the 70's with BlacKkKlansman (2018), the 80'/90s with his masterpiece Do the Right Thing (1989) and the post-September era with 25th Hour (2002).

His "joints" as he always called them were never devoid of humor, tenderness and a camera magic, editing energy and a musical sensibility that elevated them to unforgettable cinematic experiences as long as, to use that key word again, relevant.

In homage to his first Oscar win, name your favorite Spike Lee's joint?

As far as I'm concerned this should have been his first Oscar win.
Also don't like his politics, but love his work.

Lol, just when I changed the text (many mistakes and uninspired wording), you had to answer. I agree with your choice, I'm a fan of Al Pacino but Denzel Washington was seriously robbed and I can't believe that epic character-study only got two nominations: Actor and Costume Design, as if Malcolm X was a freakin' period musical.

Inside Man (2006) should displace She's Gotta Have It (1986) in the fifth poll option spot, IMHO. You may want to consider adding 4 Little Girls (1997) and other top ranked documentaries to the list. I am not sure if they qualify as "joints".

Spike Lee's 10 Best Movies Ranked
  • Jungle Fever (1991)
  • Crooklyn (1994)
  • 4 Little Girls (1997)
  • Inside Man (2006)
  • He Got Game (1998)
  • Malcolm X (1992)
  • Clockers (1995)
  • BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Inside Man is that high-ranked, I'm surprised, I still have to watch it but I thought it was regarded as too much a departure from his usual style, too convention for a Spike Lee film.

I just saw his debut She's Gotta Have it and I just adored it, with all the talk about female empowerment, now, this is a movie that can speak for many women today, I found it so ahead of its time I wasn't surprised it inspired a TV show, and now I'm hooked to it.

But I'll follow your advice and change the order.

I like Inside Man, I think it shows how versatile a director he is. As well as, how he could have been a bigger success commercially had that been his primary goal.

I have seen Blackkklansman and Inside Man, they feel like films from different directors but I enjoyed both, I would probably vote for Inside Man as I guess it will have fewer votes and I have no reason to preffer one above the other.

I love this poll, ElMo. And wow, the intro. is great. I love Spike and his films and this is a great tribute.

My vote: Do the Right Thing, which is one of my ten or fifteen favorite films that I've ever seen.

I love all of Spike’s movies but in my opinion Malcolm X is the best. The movie discusses Malcolm X in a way that the media and history books refuses to discuss about. My second favorite is Do the right thing.

Talentless, overrated, politicizing racist piece of crap. None of his movies are worth watching. He's a narcissist that thinks "Spike" is his invention. I will never recommend his garbage.

Hi, rust. I understand where you are coming from, but Lee is anything but talentless. He has made more than a few movies that are not steeped in exaggeration/surrealism or identity politics. The quality of his work has little to do with his supposed narcissism. He is not really all that different from the other high-profile Hollywood directors, with various prides and prejudices. Many of them design products to tug at the audience's emotions. Considering 1980 onward, a lot of the successful ones (maybe except for Clint Eastwood and Christopher Nolan) acquiesce to "democrat" politics.
