Live Poll: Actresses So Good at Being Bad

The expression 'so good at being bad' has often been coined for Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Jeremy Irons, Hugo Weaving... in other words: actors. But girls also had fun playing the bad ones, from the horrible and scary to the grandiose and funny, from the flamboyant witches to the manipulative (the word that rhymes), while they also garnered acclaim by playing good characters, these actresses elicited strong responses by playing villains, at least four memorable cinematic villains.

Which of these 'villain' actresses is simply the best at being bad?

I wanted to include Joan Crawford, Angela Lansbury, Julianne Moore, Anne Ramsey and Kathy Bates but I couldn't get to 4 memorable villainous roles (or just nasty characters), you're free to check... but please I need the 4 roles (a series counts for a single role).

Maybe Jennifer Jason Leigh? I'm not familiar with all of her roles but I know she has at least three - Georgia, The Hateful Eight and Kansas City.

Julianne Moore - Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Suburbicon, Hunger Games films, Carrie, Game Change(?), Eagle Eye, The Hours(?)

Gale Sondergaard - Anthony Adverse (Oscar), The Spider Woman, Christmas Holiday, Road to Rio

They're all added, Gale Sondergaard must have been the 'Tilda Swinton' of Hollywood Golden Age, I just uploaded a few pictures, I need her alone in the pic.

I thought Moore abandoned her kid in The Hours(?)...

Georgia is not a music biopic. It is a (terrific) story of two sister musicians, one famous and mainstream, one drug addicted and convinced everything is the fault of her sister. So JJL has four - Kansas City, H8, SWF and Georgia.

A few more:
Joan Crawford - The Women, The Damned Don't Cry, This Woman is Dangerous (she does reform at the end), Queen Bee, Straight Jacket
Barbara Stanwyck - Double Indemnity, Ladies They Talk About, Baby Face, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, The Furies, The Man With a Cloak, The Violent Men, The Maverick Queen, Crime of Passion, Forty Gun
Angela Lansbury - Gaslight, The Harvey Girls, If Winter Comes, State of the Union, Kind Lady, Please Murder Me, The Manchurian Candidate

At the end of Meryl you have only two periods, rather than an ellipsis.

Thanks. As I told you, I had already added your 3 suggestions, but Moore wasn't a villain in The Hours, she did "abandon" her family, but she was a character meant to inspire our sympathy, not an evil person, definitely.

Are you positive for all your other suggestions, Crawford and Stanwyck look valid but I know for sure that Lansbury was not a villain in "Gaslight", it was Boyer... and quite a despicable one. Still, that would make 5 villains for Lansbury :)

'Good poll, Elmo! 'Tough choice, too.

May I suggest just a couple small edits? ('below in bold)

But ladies also had their share of fun playing the bad ones, from the horrible and scary to the grandiose and funny, from the flamboyant witches to the manipulative (well, the word that rhymes....).   While they also garnered acclaim by playing good characters, all these distinguished actresses elicited strong responses by playing villains - at least four memorable cinematic villains.

'Great intro, by the way: 'well written and "well, the word that rhymes" is done so well, lol.

The original poster did say "at least four memorable cinematic villains" so my assumption would be that Diana Rigg hasn't played enough memorable villains. Aside from Olenna Tyrell (2013-2017) the only other obvious villain I can see in her Filmography is the Evil Queen in a 1987 version of Snow White, but I'm not a Diana Rigg fan so I haven't watched even half of the things she's appeared in and may well have missed some villainous performances.
