Poll Suggestion: Allegory of the Cave

The 'Allegory of the Cave' is an excerpt from Plato’s book, The Republic which describes a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners' reality.

The inmates of this place do not even desire to leave their prison, for they know no better life. The prisoners manage to break their bonds one day, and discover that their reality was not what they thought it was. They discovered the sun, which Plato uses as an analogy for the fire that man cannot see behind.

The main theme of Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave' is that human perception cannot derive true knowledge, and instead, real knowledge can only come via philosophical reasoning.

Which of these films that were influenced by or use the 'Allegory of the Cave' as a base for their plot do you consider the best?

A philosopher would say that.

And a scientist would say, I'll take the results my (admittedly limited) repeatable observational experiments over your philosophising any day, and twice on Sundays.

I think it's a great suggestion... but I was wondering whether the inclusion of the Fantasy genre wouldn't defeat the purpose of the allegory. I think there is a contradiction between the image of a bunch of people who had a partial thus faulty perception of reality and stories about a chosen person who could see both the real and fantasy world lying underneath. I know reality can be a relative concept but when you think about it, many Fantasy films have people living in the cave of reality while the hero is living the fantasy stuff...

This is a great poll. 'Smart, creative, original, and it applies something that everyone should know to cinema, which helps to remember and understand it. I love the one.

I am surprised this poll got in so quickly... I wish they could let a few time for Eagles90 to polish the text and the list, answer a few posts and also address my point about fantasy... as much as I love the concept of this poll, I honestly don't think a film like "Pan's Labyrinth" illustrates the allegory at all.

Yeah, that was surprisingly quick. I thought I'd have a few days to possibly add some suggestion from the poll board members and also polish the poll as ElMo said. Anyway, I can't really complain, lol.

Congratulations. :D
I'll vote anyway. It's a good issue for a poll. I think 2 movies are missing:
'The Giver' (2014) &
'Equilibrium' (2002)
