Poll Suggestion: Are We Lacking in Certain Areas

With over 5,000 polls being published IMDb site; we have seen many creative polls. They have ranged from popular movies, television shows, and unforgettable characters. I just wanted ask if there is an area you do not feel has been significantly represented in the voting community?

i think we need more polls with lesser known, more intelligent films...forget all this mumbo jumbo about 'star ratings' and such...

when you go by that, only the heath ledger joker questions and shawshank redemption voters make their way past the qualifications...

let's raise the bar on what people might watch...some pollmakers have done this, but more need to...

one recent poll even showed the afi top movies verses the imdb top movies and which ones were missing from imdb...it was, in a word, disgraceful...

bring out more intelligent polls and leave the multiplex alone...

The weakness doesn't come with the poll suggesters but the limitations brought on the lack of image files for many people (video game makers, authors, Youtube personalities, internet bloggers, etc...) that don't have a large enough presence or a motivation to be on IMDb.

I've many great ideas that revolve around books, games, etc... that can be adapted; film review related questions (associated with Youtube); etc... that can be put into existence because I won't create lists that are missing most of their related images.

I have an ongoing list of Musical Bens (musicians named Ben) but won't put it into an official proposal because ... half of the people pages are missing images (due to lack of interest by their publicists or whomever controls their image).  Many of these musicians have music and songs published on tv and movies ... so you can't complain that it isn't IMDb relevant.

I'll pause my rant for now because I have work to do.

stephen...i think that's brilliant...musicians named ben...i would love a poll like that...and who cares about having a picture or not...what's important is that the information is there as to who the person is...

please make it official...i will gladly vote...

and keep great ideas like that coming regardless...i would live to see polls about books as well...excellent idea...

we just need to get over the thought that if there's no picture, nobody will vote for it...if there are enough polls without pictures, people will get used to the idea that we don't always need them...

thank you for your comments...i really did enjoy them...

You can upload the pictures by yourself, it takes one day to get them and the list is ready in a few days. I thought there was some rule that prevented you from putting picutres yourself.

I never realized it until last year, and I could make dozens of polls because I uploaded the pictures myself, if you click on these links, more than 80% of the pictures weren't available and I had to upload them one by one (in one month and half, I upload 1000 pictures)

Simpsons Kissing Edition: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls066128012/#1 and http://www.imdb.com/list/ls066100513/

No Elm.  You can't add photos to actors and filmmakers people pages.  That's where IMDb gets a lot of money.  The actors, filmmakers, etc... need to subscribe to IMDb Pro in order to upload those non stills, portraits, etc....

You can add images to movie, tv, and episode title pages but many of these people in question don't have character pages because they are real people who aren't actors. They work on these relevant TV and Movie projects behind the scenes: soundtrack, writers of books to be adapted, etc....

I know that you know the distinction of those image files and the ones of movie and tv stills that can be uploaded to their respective IMDb photo galleries.

Yeah, but that's nothing. Suppose I want a picture of Jean Gabin in his younger years, well, I'll pick a still frame from one of his earlier films, or a 'behind the scenes' photo that clearly indicates which film it belongs to.

Suppose you want to add the picture of Ike Turner, you select a show where he appeared, sureley you'll find the credit on IMDb and when you get to the page, you upload the picture of Ike Turner from that show. If you don't find the picture, you can go on Youtube and click on an archive video where he appeared, and then you take a screen shot. Youtube screenshots work all the time, you just make sure you get rid of the "borders" and have a clean picture.

So, all you need is to make sure these people have been interviewed some day or appeared in a famous show, I guess if you write their name on Youtube, you can find an archive footage, then you've got to check if the program has a page on IMDb, and then you upload the picture and it will automatically appear on the man's page.

And if you really find nothing, then you select a picture that represents the person' most significant or celebrated work. It doesn't need to be a "face".

You're clearly missing my point by a few thousand light years.  He's an actor.  That's easy to set up image wise.  How in the hell can we feature a poll featuring Benjamin Britten the composer?

Taking your Ike Turner example.  He has been in a biopic about Tina Turner ... so he has a character page.  You can add Laurence Fishburne to the character page through a roundabout, slightly painful route but it can be done.

What you can't do is take that screen capture and add it directly to the Ike Turner page, even if it's an image of Ike Turner.

I am a great advocate of image lists and polls.  But sometimes ... they can be too difficult to translate as many people tend to ignore the text in the option and simply vote for the movie or tv image at hand.  Going back to Benjamin Britten?  How do you suggest I get an image for him?  I am taking your advice right now and researching for archival material to screen capture though I doubt they will have an equivalent/related IMDb page to add it to their respective image gallery ... and hopefully will get it linked to Benjamin Britten's page.

All right.

1/ IMDb: he's credited as "self" in 1979 Documentary: A Time There Was

2/ On Youtube, I find the documentary, it's just an excerpt  but as long as we can see him, it's good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvTIkr25agE

3/  I pause the picture at 0:47. I have my still.

4/ I make a screen capture, or screen shot and save the picture in my computer.

5/ I go to the photo gallery of the documentary and upload the picture, in the name section, I'll put "Benjamin Britten"

6/ When the photo gets uploaded, the picture will be in Britten's gallery as well, if not, as long as you have the image, the rest doesn't matter, you can use it for your poll.

stephen...you said...

'...many people tend to ignore the text in the option and simply vote for the movie or tv image at hand...'

maybe that's one of the problems...maybe we shouldn't have images at all, then they would have to actually read for a change...

by the way sdk...cool shot of benjamin briiten...

You need a question mark at the end of the title. A better/easier understood title could be "How Can IMDb Polls Be Better?" or "I Want a Poll About..." or "We Need More Polls About..." or "IMDb Needs More Polls About..." or similar.

FYC:
Films made before 1970
Actors from before 1970
Polls focused on lesser-known performers
Polls focused on behind-the-scenes artists other than directors, writers and composers

For lesser-known I put Southern Comfort as it starred underappreciated actors Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine. I don't known if that is what you wanted.

Woe!  Thats just too many silly comic book casting polls for IMDB.

Yeah right.

This is the period of comic movies dominating Box offices.

Top 10 Movies of 2016 on IMDB by  Michael Rosser (IMDb Editor)
"This list comprises the top 10 movies released in 2016 that were most consistently popular with IMDb users according to MovieMeter. These rankings are not based upon critical assessments or box office performance, but on pageviews by our combined web and mobile audience of more than 250 million unique monthly visitors." — Michael Rosser (IMDb Editor) https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/poll-suggestion-top-10-movies-of-2016

1. Suicide Squad (2016)
2. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
3. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
4. Deadpool (2016)
5. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

First top 5 movies are from comic book.

Why turn away from Comic book casting or Comic book topics  as polls?

In my opinion, allowing more diversity in polls wouldn't mean much if we're stuck to the same format.
Polls in the homepage garner like 10000 votes in one week while you're happy if you made 400 votes with a regular poll.

In the old days, we could dream of 10000 votes in one day in the homepage, then the value was divided by then... and by ten again, today. We should get back to the old system: one day, one poll in the homepage and in the middle (but that's a dream)..

I'm tired of seeing the same old threads again in the homepage 'The Cast of Harry Potter Now and Then' (oh my God, kids grew up!!! Who would have thought?) a 2000's startlet "through the years", "Memorable Beards", "Memorable Body Transformations". We suggest new stuff everyday but it's the old stuff that gets all the attention and is constantly recycled.

I wasn't blaming the authors for the recycled topics. I thought maybe if certain options got a lot of votes then maybe we wouldn't see at least one GoT, SW, LOTRs, or award type poll every week.

One day homepage polls would be a nice change.

hey sdk...

i would love to try and come up with a few fresh polls (and i think i could easily do that), but...even if i did, i wouldn't know how to make it into a poll unless i gave it to you, or someone else, to do (and yes, i've heard all the explanations about how to make a poll...but i'm over fifty, and haven't got a clue what anybody is talking about...ha-ha...)...and i would have no problem whatsoever with someone else's name on it...but sadly...whatever i would suggest, probably only a few people would have ever heard of (like yourself, jen, and rubyfruit to name a scant few)...

It's not a big deal to make a poll but if you're more interested into getting the poll made, turning the idea into something real, you can ask anyone of us, I'd be glad to help. What kind of polls would you have in mind? If you could magically make one right now, what would it be?

thank you sdk...i may take you up on that once i've given it some thought...

however...if i could magically make one right now, my thought would probably have something to do with voting on what you actually already like or what sounds like something you may like, in either great movies that fell thru the crack, or great albums that need to be heard...

Like ElMo, I'd be glad to help, rocky, including making a poll - but, with your permission, I'd include your username in the intro. to give credit where credit's due. : )

Oh, speaking of movies that fell through the cracks, here's one a former poll author made a few years ago that I thought was really good:

hey rubyfruit...

sdk just put out a suggestion for top 10 favorite movies, which is great...

i had suggested to him that documentaries should have a list of their own, rather than be mixed together (and my documentary favorites would obliterate my movie list anyway)...

so since you mentioned helping with making a poll, would you maybe be interested in doing a top 10 favorite documentary list...or even work together with sdk if there is interest on that end...

who knows...just a thought...

At first I thought this was an "on-topic" type of post, which would be a good idea; then I noticed it's a poll suggestion and I think it's an even better idea. Later tonight I should have some time to try to put my suggestions into cohesive form and lucid words, if they haven't been covered already.

by the way ruby...read that poll you sent me on 'lesser known films...thank you so much...it was excellent...(that's the kind of thing i would love to see more often)...sad it was from a few years ago...

but my vote on that poll was between 'my first mister' and 'under milk wood'...eventually went with milk wood...

i certainly know that when i see something suggested by a poll maker which may sound interesting, or who i respect and usually find on the same taste wavelength as myself, i am more inclined to discover films and such that i was even unaware of...

like rubyfruit just mentioned 'brazil', 'being john malkevich', and 'sex lies and videotape'... three great movies i've already seen, but if i hadn't, i would definitely check them out (or maybe even revisit them again)...

I think the best way to promote more diverse polls, is front page status. Unfortunately that's beyond the control of any of us.

Besides the many times mentoned fact that the front page poll is featured for a long time, when it would be best to change it every day or at least each two days to give more polls a chance to shine, the polls posted in there are almost always based on popular films and blockbusters.

Everyone would like to get its polls there, so that encourages us to make questions about popular films instead of getting creative.

Also, when you make a poll about an old or lesser known film, it is unlikely to get many votes, and that also makes it unlikely to be picked. I sometimes like to make questions about lesser known movies or tv series, and see it as a way to invite people to see them, but they won't get far in the selection process.
