when you go by that, only the heath ledger joker questions and shawshank redemption voters make their way past the qualifications...
let's raise the bar on what people might watch...some pollmakers have done this, but more need to...
one recent poll even showed the afi top movies verses the imdb top movies and which ones were missing from imdb...it was, in a word, disgraceful...
bring out more intelligent polls and leave the multiplex alone...
The weakness doesn't come with the poll suggesters but the limitations brought on the lack of image files for many people (video game makers, authors, Youtube personalities, internet bloggers, etc...) that don't have a large enough presence or a motivation to be on IMDb.
I've many great ideas that revolve around books, games, etc... that can be adapted; film review related questions (associated with Youtube); etc... that can be put into existence because I won't create lists that are missing most of their related images.
I have an ongoing list of Musical Bens (musicians named Ben) but won't put it into an official proposal because ... half of the people pages are missing images (due to lack of interest by their publicists or whomever controls their image). Many of these musicians have music and songs published on tv and movies ... so you can't complain that it isn't IMDb relevant.
I'll pause my rant for now because I have work to do.
Films made before 1970
Actors from before 1970
Polls focused on lesser-known performers
Polls focused on behind-the-scenes artists other than directors, writers and composers
Polls in the homepage garner like 10000 votes in one week while you're happy if you made 400 votes with a regular poll.
In the old days, we could dream of 10000 votes in one day in the homepage, then the value was divided by then... and by ten again, today. We should get back to the old system: one day, one poll in the homepage and in the middle (but that's a dream)..
I'm tired of seeing the same old threads again in the homepage 'The Cast of Harry Potter Now and Then' (oh my God, kids grew up!!! Who would have thought?) a 2000's startlet "through the years", "Memorable Beards", "Memorable Body Transformations". We suggest new stuff everyday but it's the old stuff that gets all the attention and is constantly recycled.
* "Polls about movies in languages other than English" (such as Roshomon, The Salesman, Salaam Bombay!)
* "Polls about movies that weren't/aren't in wide release, that I might not know about unless a poll is made according to recommendations via Meta-Critic scores, Rotten Tomatoes scores, or Poll Board recommendation" (such as Personal Shopper)
I think the best way to promote more diverse polls, is front page status. Unfortunately that's beyond the control of any of us.
Besides the many times mentoned fact that the front page poll is featured for a long time, when it would be best to change it every day or at least each two days to give more polls a chance to shine, the polls posted in there are almost always based on popular films and blockbusters.
Everyone would like to get its polls there, so that encourages us to make questions about popular films instead of getting creative.
Also, when you make a poll about an old or lesser known film, it is unlikely to get many votes, and that also makes it unlikely to be picked. I sometimes like to make questions about lesser known movies or tv series, and see it as a way to invite people to see them, but they won't get far in the selection process.
