That's very interesting and reminds me of a (real) story Béla Balázs told in his book "The Spirit of Film" (1930). It's about a man who was considered an intellectual and was always up to-date with the latest cultural and technological news. Only he lived in a very small village for some time and didn't have the chance to witness the advent of cinema.
After fifteen years, the same man arrives in a big city, and he is eager to go to the movie theater. He goes to see the movies that attract big audiences like comedies, adventure movies, etc. Someone asks him, "so what do you think of those movies?" - "They look fantastic, but I don't have the slightest idea what happened."
Apparently, despite his intellectual capacities, the man was unable to link the shots into a coherent narrative; something that was easy even for children at that time. It was all too developed, too fast and arranged with complex codes. Balázs says, "Four or five years ago, we wouldn't have understood the most simple films that are being made today."
It seems incredible what he writes. Let's be optimistc against these statements. My pick is The Shining. I'd like to see what impact a movie that is frightening even to modern audiences can make on the people of 1918.

That is an interesting thought experiment, especially since movies evolved gradually and so did people's fascination with the medium. Earliest movies just needed to show anything to get the attention (which never prevented even pioneers like Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince or Lumière brothers from experimenting further and actually making some live-action fiction) but chances are that for people not familiar with medium and its rules it would have been impossible to even comprehend what's going on...

I might be wrong, so I guess the first serious story-teller by moving pictures was Georges Méliès. I think all of the pioneers are surely fascinating. Without them, I wouldn't have a head full of movies. ;)

No, I'd say they rather competed with each other. Eidson did movies for his own invention known as Kinetoscope, while Lumières brought projection to larger masses, although invention by earlier pioneer Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince was a bit similar to both of that and he disappeared mysteriously...

Perhaps you could drop the "IMDb Top 250" requirement and replace it with "minimum 7.0 rating and xxx,000 votes".
I was not aware Schindler's List was in the Top 250 when I suggested it, and if it had been rejected I probably would not have made the effort to check the Top 250 for a new suggestion.

Don't Worry. I check, if it fits to the rules. Some movies I don't have to think about, if they're on top-250. Specially those like 'Schindlers List'. But there are still many other movies at the top-250-list you can choose instead, because nobody has choosen before. Or is there an movie that goes to your head and doesn't match the rules? I think it should be a real good one or very interesting to change the rules. But I relly meant from the Top 250 to keep a very tight circle of movies. Nikolay had the same problem about his choice. Maybe I should do that. I think I'll sleep over this decision. Thank you for the idea. :)
