Basil Rathbone made 14 films as Sherlock Holmes from 1939 to 1946. In your opinion, which of these classic movies is the best?

Hi Nighthawk,

Welcome to the IMDb Poll message board. Thank you for your poll suggestion and thank you for including a properly working discussion link.

I've enjoyed the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes films for many years.

My favorite:
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the reply. As you can see I'm new to this. Happy to take advice / suggestions.

This movie certainly is 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', which every other version is compared against. I also wonder how in 1939 they felt about that last line, when Holmes turns back and says "Oh Watson, the needle."

Best,

Hi rocky-o,

The 'Star of India' goes missing on the train. Great twist. Funny conversation about curry. Very good.

I’m kind of partial to “Sherlock Holmes Faces Darth” because it so different from the rest and has a nice spooky feel to it.

Hi DGranger,

I agree. Good story adapted from Conan-Doyle original (The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual).

There's some great closeups on Rathbone as the story develops and the scenes in the crypt are great.

Good poll and great first poll! My vote: 'Hound' or 'Scarlet Claw,' and I think I'll vote for 'Claw' because it will most likely get less votes. Welcome to the poll board! : )

Hi rubyfruit76,

Thank you for the kind words.

I do like Scarlet Claw. It has an odd eerie feeling at times. For example in the opening scene, when everyone is weirdly still even though time is passing. I'm not sure it was deliberate but it creates the sense something is not right. The beginning of this film is extremely good as you get into the story instantly. It's also a good detective story told through film; there's a motive somewhere and we learn it as the plot develops.

Indeed, the film has such a strong sense of foreboding. I really want to see it again, soon, because I'm starting to forget certain details but what is still very clear is the mood it creates.

It's really nice to have you aboard. Your poll is I think just one of two first polls that I can remember being constructed perfectly from the start. You're a natural. : )

Congratulations Nighthawk, it is not common to have your first poll published so fast, but you followed all the rules like a seasoned pollmaker and had an original idea.

Everyone here, besides the champions will be happy to give you advice for your future suggestions if we can.

Thank you, Pencho15

The word 'seasoned' is apt for me ;-)

I'm sure I'll need everyone's advice and guidance.
