Science fiction has long been considered by some experts to be a lesser genre than traditional dramas and character studies. Because it lends itself so easily to exploitation, science fiction isn’t always given the respect it deserves. Sure, it tends to be a box office winner, but some still consider science fiction something not to be taken seriously.

One thing for sure, nothing as creative as sci-fi movie directors. They are experts in visual storytelling. Regardless of how crazy and seemingly improbable it is to realize a sci-fi story onto the big screen. From human clones to alien invasions, ideas have no limits when science collides with the great minds of filmmaking.

Some of these directors first feature movie is sci-fi but not all them are exclusively as sci-fi movie directors in a long run because they're also are acclaimed directors in various genres, but some of their works stand out as one of the most acclaimed sci-fi movies ever made. Their first work in sci-fi movie, which one do you think is the best?

"I knew exactly what to do on Alien, it was funny." Ridley Scott

To be super honest this was Cameron's first movie which has sci-fi among genres. But it was more like 0,5th feature film of his considering other director took over halfway through.

Another correction: Cronenberg's first sci-fi is Stereo (Tile 3B of a CAEE Educational Mosaic) (1969)

The Matrix (1999) (The Wachoswkis: Lilly and Lana
Either Re-Animator (1985) or From Beyond (1986) (both being sci-fi horror with latter gravitating more twoards latter; Stuart Gordon has a lot of pure sci-fi on his resume and should be mentioned more especially now that he passed away, unfortunately)

Piranha was Cameron's first feature movie credit, but it doesn't have sci-fi among the 3 genres, so I picked Terminator instead.

Corrected Cronenberg's first sci-fi, The Matrix is already on the list and added Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator (1985) thanks.

Piranha II has Sci-Fi listed if you look at the full listing of five genres.

Yeah, but the problem is that it won't be visible on the list.
