Action is one of my favourite genres and there's nothing better than an 80's action movie with a muscle bound protagonist shooting up bad guys, blowing stuff up, getting the girl and saving the day. No decade better captured this than the 1980s. While there are well known masterpieces like Die Hard, The Terminator, Lethal Weapon, Predator and Robocop- there are those which are less remembered but you kind of admit are awesome! Which of these movies is your favourite to put on when your in the mood for some explosive, synthesiser heavy, testosterone filled entertainment?

Wow, that will be a TOUGH poll to vote. The Running Man is one of my 25 all-time favorites (I don't even consider it a guilty pleasure - I guess it's too self-aware to be there), John Carpenter and Albert Pyun are among my favorite directors and all those Norris, Bronson and Schwarzenegger classics!

I haven't seen The Running Man in a while but I do remember enjoying it heaps. I'm also a huge John Carpenter fan- I was hesitant to put his films on the list but I know some people who reckon they are quite campy/silly so I included them.

Finally someone else who likes The Running Man (though it's been quite some time since I've seen it).

I'm also a huge John Carpenter fan- I was hesitant to put his films on the list but I know some people who reckon they are quite campy/silly so I included them.

Shame on those people!

Hi, albstein.
'The Running Man' is now wiped from the German Index a few weeks ago. We can watch it on Amazon Video and soon on disc. UNCUT !

Yay! It's happening to other formerly mutilated movies as well, like the Evil Dead series and the Italian gialli movies. Finally a good time to be a German film fan.

I'm aware that some of the same cast and crew worked on both Big Trouble and The Golden Child, very interesting.

Of course! I thought I was missing one of the big action stars! I'll include The Punisher and Red Scorpion.

These "guilty" pleasures are more enjoyable than any today's legitimate action picture that takes itself far too seriously.

My first thought was Red Dawn - glad you included it.

On your actual list, the title should just be: Best Guilty Pleasure 1980s Action Movie, Poll Suggestion should not be part of it.

Wiki: A guilty pleasure is something, such as a film, a television program or a piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard, or is seen as unusual or weird. For example, a person may secretly like a movie knowing that the movie is poorly made and generally seen as "not good."

Rambo II was a big hit when it came out in theaters - NOT under the radar.
Wiki: Rambo: First Blood Part II opened in the US on May 22, 1985, and was the #1 film that weekend, taking in $20,176,217 on 2,074 screens (which made it the first film in the US to be shown on 2,000+ screens). Overall, in the US, the film grossed $150,415,432 and $149,985,000 internationally, giving First Blood Part II a box office total of $300,400,432. The movie broke various international box office records.

They Live, Big Trouble and Escape from NY both have become far more popular as the years have gone on. None of these are guilty pleasures.

FYC:
Krull
Cannonball Run II
Iron Eagle
Night of the Comet
License to Drive

The reason I included the Rambo sequels is that the first one is a legitimately good film with a good story, great drama and excellent character development. Rambo II and III however are full on action pictures with large body counts, explosive arrows and character development isn't the main focus. I mean I love them but I do feel guilty liking them, especially when people compare them to First Blood. As for John Carpenter, yeah I did mention before I was hesitant on putting them on the list but they do have a campy quality to them so I decided to include them.

The prefacing of the subject heading of the poll is somewhat problematic, because what a lot of us have in mid about a "guilty pleasure" is something that we actually kind of feel guilty about enjoying because it is shoddy, shallow, hollow, weak, insulting, offensive, misrepresentative or pretentious, possibly unpopular or low-grossing. In other words, even though the items of the list are seemingly not Oscar-worthy (by the standards of what they competed with at the time of release), they are still highly-acclaimed. It's almost as if any older "guilty pleasure" flick aligns right in with the concept of "cult classic". On the other hand, They Live is a potential example of a cult classic.

Highly acclaimed I wouldn't say is the case. Critics like Roger and Ebert used to SLAM movies like this when they first came out and others dismissed them as insubstantial garbage. However, I do agree that, like a lot of uncritically acclaimed movies, they do develop cult followings from movie fans who love good genre pictures. Not everything has to be thought provoking avant garde cinema and that's what we movie fans appreciate. Are we guilty of liking movies like Commando, Tango & Cash and Death Wish 3? Maybe, but we sure as hell think they are entertaining and exciting movies!

As Jen mentioned earlier, please remove "Poll Suggestion:" from your list title.
American English is preferred:

Which Is Your Favorite 1980s Action Movie Guilty Pleasure?

Polls should always be as objective as possible, so may I suggest removing this part from the intro:

"Action is one of my favourite genres"

There's nothing better than an 80's action movie with a muscle bound protagonist shooting up bad guys, blowing stuff up, getting the girl and saving the day. No decade better captured this than the 1980s. While there are well known masterpieces like Die Hard, The Terminator, Lethal Weapon, Predator and Robocop- there are those which are less remembered but you kind of admit are awesome!

Which of these movies is your favorite to put on when you are in the mood for some explosive, synthesiser heavy, testosterone filled entertainment?

Thanks, I've made the changes. The reason I didn't have it in American English is because I'm Australian, so I wasn't aware American English was the standard.

Love the idea. :)

My vote:Escape from New York (1981)

But if I'm in a mood for some "BANG", I would go for Commando (1985)
even though half of the time it only shows arms of Schwarzenegger. :D

Yet to see any! (Disappointed in self right about now)

Have wanted to see They Live (1988) and Big Trouble in Little China (1986) for a while though... they look so wonderfully culty.

Wow really? You mustn't be an eighties action buff like me lol. Do yourself a favour and check out John Carpenter's body of work! All his films have a nice slow burn charm to them- wonderfully culty indeed.

Hi James and I hope I've already welcomed you to  the "poll board." If I didn't, it's overdue, but welcome. :)

I would vote for 'Escape from New York.'

May I suggest a few small edits to the intro? (They're in bold.)

By the way, that's a really good intro. and I love the details of the question -- that's so true, for example, that these movies used a lot of synthesizers, lol.

Thanks, the changes have been made. I'm surprised by the immense popularity of Escape from New York, it's a great movie that I didn't know was loved that much and put in such high regard lol. I'm almost convinced to take it off the list, but nah I wouldn't do that to you guys :)

What is the name of the movie that has Whoop Whoop I think in the title. They Show the same movie every week on a 16MM projector outside. The guy drives a VW bus? Picks up a girl hitchhiking. They go to the town and dismantle his Bus so he can't escape. 1980's? I love that movie. Guilty Pleasure? It's an Aussie Flick.
