After the reality of the "Network" news coverage of the Vietnam War, television had dropped censoring standards to allow those stories to air. The unintended consequences to that softening was the "Entertainment" divisions at those same networks world-wide saw it as an opportunity to push the boundaries on content. This started in 1969 unofficially.
What was your favorite of that era on TV?

Note: The 1969-1970 Season began Sept of 1969.

Great idea!  To be honest, the 70's wasn't my cup of tea, but some of the Fawlty Towers episodes I saw once were pretty funny, so that's my vote!

Ed,

I'm not certain what you mean by "newly created".

Three's Company (1976–1984) is a remake of the British comedy Man About the House (1973) (TV Series).

Sanford and Son (1972–1977)  is a remake of the British comedy Steptoe and Son (1962) (TV Series).

The Jeffersons (1975–1985)  is a spin-off of All in the Family (1971) (TV Series).

All in the Family (1971–1979)  is a remake of the British comedy Till Death Us Do Part (1965) (TV Series).

I grew up with "the Fonz" every week on Wednesday evening, so my vote goes to Happy Days (1974–1984).

not sure the Dukes of Hazard is a "sit-com." Wasn't it an hour long?

Yes. but there is no real hard rule that says a sit-com must be 30 minutes.

A sitcom, clipping for situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who carry over from episode to episode.

By that definition, Monty Python, a sketch comedy, isn't a sitcom. There isn't a fixed set of characters. It's moot now that the poll is published.

"Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch." From the Wiki page that you referred to ... (the sentence immediately after your word for word definition of sitcom).

I have seen only a few of those. I was not particularly impressed with the American series.

I loved "Fawlty Towers". Basil Fawlty is misanthrope whose attempts at hospitality are doomed to failure, and his marriage is devoid of any affection. John Cleese created Basil as a caricature of the eccentric hotel manager Donald Sinclair (1909-1981). Sinclair was a former merchant mariner and war veteran, whose rudeness and inhospitality made him quite unsuitable for his career choice.

My second choice would be the long-running "Are You Being Served?". The show was set entirely within a department store, and depicted the relationships between the main staff. Character types such as the lecherous big boss, the self-important department supervisor (eternally requiring people to call him by his military rank, a mere "Captain"), the closeted gay sales assistant, etc are still quite relevant and relatable after four decades. And the constant innuendos provide saucy humor in an otherwise "respectable" working environment.
