Best "None of your friends like it" Movie Ever

Time to time appears one movie that none of your friends seem to get, but instead mesmerizes you. Pick your personal best weird movie, where nothing is what it seems!

In my case that can be a VERY big list... Donnie Darko is already there, though. :)

FYC:
Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1992)
Videodrome (1983)
Crash (1996)
Cosmopolis (2012)
Eraserhead (1977)
Inland Empire (2006)
Mulholland Dr. (2001)

I mean, there are three movies for both David Lynch and David Cronenberg, but these two in general could make a few lists of those. :)

Your friends don't like Man Bites Dog? When I was a student, it was the movie every guy could recite by heart, every scene is hilarious until it gets a bit nasty... I'm surprised by that inclusion.

It's one of those movies that you only suggest to selected friends and of those fewer people would actually like it.

Although I have Color of Night (1994) among my favorites, as well: now that's a movie I somehow forgot to suggest which rarely anyone likes when I mention it. :)

i think any david lynch movie can be up here (except perhaps 'straight story'), and mulholland drive would definitely be one of my choices...also from your list...altered states...haven't seen it in awhile but always liked it...

and seriously...how can anyone not like memento...

a terrifically intelligent film that challenges you at every frame...the only way you can't like this one is if you don't pay attention...

great list...great idea...one possible addition...'jacob's ladder' starring tim robbins...

i may be back with more after some more coffee...but what you have is already worthy indeed...

I think the real strength of "Memento" is its simplicity. Yes simplicity.

When you think about it, the story is rather simple but it is told in a complex way, Nolan creates ramifications of surprises, twists, shocks and revelations through a simple choice of storytelling tool. It's one of these rare occasions where it's the directing and editing that enhances the 'intelligence' of the movie, not the writing.

Intelligence in the literal sense inter lego, read between, read between the lines or read between the two scenes... when one ending becomes a beginning and vice versa... I just love a movie where the intelligence is in its construction and it says a lot about how greatness can be accessible, you don't need to have complex themes, labyrinthine plots or clever writing, you can be as good a manipulator if you just know how to use the power of images.

My friends are more into mainstream movies... so it's more a case of "none of your friends watched it"

As a big fan of that movie I should say it's one of the most polarizing movies ever. I know a lot of people who disliked it for one reason or another.

Awkward, seeing as how I don't have a whole lot of friends, and of the ones that I do have, I can't readily recall a movie that both they and I have seen but which they didn't like. On a more personal note, technically I only have relatives and associates, not standard friends (as in "people who go places and do things with you on a regular basis"). There! Now you know a little bit more about the mysterious me.

I don't know anybody who both saw Donnie Darko and also disliked it. For that, I'm grateful.

I can echo that statement. However, I used to have a friend (and that friend‘s friends) who had a similar taste to me and we even rooted together for the same obscure movies. And my sister still watches weird Japanese stuff and black and white classics with me, so no complaints on that front.

But still, there‘s one movie that everyone hated but me: The Babadook.

Hi gabcastell,

Thank you for your poll suggestion. Thank you also for including a link back to this thread in your list.

Once someone responds to your post, only an admin can edit your post. If you need to edit your original post in this thread, please make the request in this thread; I or one of the other admins will make the change for you.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of any film that I really like that my friends do not like. If I think of such a film, I will post it in this thread.

Hi and welcome to poll authoring. :)

Generally, I think that polls that are from a more personal, subjective point of view don't work as well, but I like this one lot because, of course, everyone knows, to some degree, what that's like to be the "only one" who "gets" a movie, and also because you put together a list of movies that even more clearly defines what you mean: films that are, more or less, unconventional, less mainstream, and not necessarily aiming at appealing to the masses. 'So hats off. :)

That said, my tastes have never been for blockbusters or what's generally considered mainstream so these movies don't seem that out-there for me. Still, I know what you mean.

FYC:

Eraserhead (although I suppose it's probably wise to keep the list to one film per director or it's going to be a list of David Lynch films, lol)

Naked Lunch

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie

Oh, I would suggest removing the "Ever" from the title: it makes polls too big and too ambitious. "Ever' is a very long time and a very big picture and simply removing it from the title goes a long way in alleviating the grandiosity.

Hi,

Please include a question in your list.

Instead of:
Pick your personal best weird movie, where nothing is what it seems!

May I suggest:
Among these weird movies where nothing is what it seems, which is your pick?

I'd also suggest adding "From" at the beginning of the first sentence.

From time to time appears one movie that none of your friends seem to get, but instead mesmerizes you.

I like this poll and the list has some very good movies; my vote: 'Lars and the Real Girl.'

I think you need a connecty-type word (idk what they're called) after 'time to time'.

To add even more to rubyfruit76's suggestion, the following might sound good:

  • From time to time there appears one movie that none of your friends seem to get, but instead mesmerizes you.
  • From time to time a movie appears that none of your friends seem to get, but instead mesmerizes you.

Awesome idea!  I have sooooooo many of those!  But for now, I'll stick with the first and foremost one:
Last Action Hero (1993)
Are T.V. episodes included?  (My episode would be a long one, 1 and a half hours or so)  If not, that;s fine.

I would not recommend Donnie Darko to any friend.
I would include titles like
Coffe And Cigarretes. Nobody in their right mind (Unless I know) liked this.
Pi.
The Happening
The Village
Recently, Us, is not the great movie I was expecting but when I went to see those who were with me they despised her.

Well... I love or at least like most of those, very much including Donnie Darko (2001) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). :) Some of the finest movies 2000's had to offer if you'd ask me and it's a bit ironic that both of them are time-displaced with first one being set in the 80's and second one mostly filmed in the 80's and 90's. I keep suspecting that making movies as timeless as possible actually works for them in the long term. :)

I also liked Coffe and Cigarettes a lot. The people that I have asked they say it's boring, But every time I hear that, I defend it. It is a film that divides opinions
