Bronenosets Potemkin (1925) is technically a Soviet movie as in made by Soviet Union, but period it covers is actually before the Soviet Union (1905), so it's arguable.

Don't get me wrong: movie is essential for Soviet cinema, but thematically it does not cover Soviet Union, if event was integral for Soviet communist regime and its mythology.

My bad ! I believe I mixed it up with October (Ten Days that Shook the World), which already happens to be on the list.

Hi Maxim and welcome to the poll board. : )

I spent a month in Russia when I was 17 and, ever since, I've been fascinated by most things Soviet, as well as Russian, so I really like this one. You've got a good list of films, too: bravo!

FYC:

Citizen X

Reds

Oh, I suggest changing the title to be more precise: "Best Soviet Movie" refers to films produced in the Soviet Union or by Soviets, whereas you're asking about films about the Soviet Union. "Best Movie About the Soviet Union" would be a more accurate title -- or you could use something like "Back in the USSR."

The Soviet Union is only very loosely present in these movies. There are some Soviet soldiers at the end of The Pianist but apart from that it's about the Nazi German oocupation of Poland. First Man is about the Space Race between the US and the USSR, but solely from the American perspective. Or perhaps I'm forgetting something?

Most of them are from the American perspective or non-Russian productions, so I'd rather call them Soviet-themed movies... and one of the best is the so criminally-underrated THE INNER CIRCLE (https://www.imdb.com/review/rw3333238/)

The best Soviet movie I've ever seen (so far) is the Golden Palm winner WHEN THE CRANES ARE FLYING (https://www.imdb.com/review/rw4880952/) would even put it right on the top

In my opinion it might be useful to slightly tweak the title of the suggestion and re-title it as Best Soviet-Themed Movie. Otherwise, amount of people arguing here that the poll is misleading might increase drastically, because usually "Soviet movie" is a term reserved for movies made in and by USSR. I'm saying "by" because in the Soviet Union every single professional film studio up until the late 80's was state-owned and strictly regulated.
