Live Poll: Best US TV Detective Teams (pre-2000)

Here's my second poll suggestion: Best US TV Detective Teams (pre-2000)

Contenders are limited to US TV detective teams, must have lasted at least two seasons, and started pre-2000. I'm excluding non-US teams in part due to the sheer number and there have been non-US detective polls already. Titles need to be rated 6.5 or above and have at least 1500 votes.

Based upon rating a/o # of votes, the following have been eliminated:
CHiPs, Jake and the Fatman, Burke's Law, Baywatch Nights, Police Woman, Father Dowling Mysteries, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, Crazy Like a Fox, Switch, Raven.

Right now the list includes 27 teams, so some reduction in the size is likely warranted, but did I miss any. Who should be cut, if any?

Get Smart
8. Get Smart (1965–1970) This is a stretch
The Man from UNCLE
12. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964–1968) This too
Mod Squad
14. Mod Squad (1968–1973)
The Untouchables
22. The Untouchables (1959–1963)

Ed,
I've added mod squad (can't believe I forget them, I watched them) and the untouchables. Already had NYPD Blue.
77 Sunset doesn't meet the 6.5/1500 limit, and I dropped Batman so The Green Hornet is out.
All good suggestions.
Dropping A-team & Scarecrow & Mrs. King as they don't really fit as detectives. (excluding those that are primarily "spies" which include Man from Uncle and Get Smart.). A-Team didn't really detect.
I originally did my keyword with detective, but forget now which title missed on that but had police detective so re-did search and now up to 31.
Need a way to cut some.  A bunch are rated between 6.5-7 so increasing that cut would be too drastic I think.

Heat of the Night and Hill St are Cop Shows. Only Tibbs is the Detective on Heat.

Now is time for the Hawaii team.
Magnum PI
12. Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988) 7.4/19,883
Due South
65. Due South (1994–1999)  8.0/5661
Spenser For Hire
87. Spenser: For Hire (1985–1988)  7.2/1828

For Fun
I'd add it to one of my polls. It fits the criteria.
The Sylvester Tweety Mysteries
115. The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries (1995–2001) 7.1/3,125
Sylvester Cat, Tweety Bird, and Hector the Bulldog are the pets of Granny, a gingerly matron with a penchant for solving mysteries. Granny is a Jessica Fletcher-like traveling detective who investigates disappearing objects and bizarre events at the four corners of the globe, while Sylvester constantly tries to grab and eat Tweety and is stopped by ever dutiful Hector, appointed Tweety's guardian by Granny.

right/wrong/indiff spenser I have in my lone detective poll. I really liked urich and while he did work with brooks, who I also really liked, I thought he was enough alone. so i'll have to ponder a little.
on hill st there were several detectives, but I suppose the question of whether a team is 100% valid. again need to ponder a touch.
mag simply belongs in the other poll.  He can't fit in both.
tweety and sylvester i've never seen. if i can find a good way to reduce the # maybe because i loved tweety.
i hate to increase the poll rating as it will cut out some good ones.

How many is too many choices? Right now I have 30 and to me that is too many. Any way I see trying to establish cuts by using imdb rating or # of votes seems to cut out options that I think should stay. Right now my cut is 6.5 and 2000 votes. If I change that to 7 and 2000 votes it will take the # down to 20 but will get rid of several classics.

So is 30 too many or 20 too few?

No such thing as too many or few.
Consensus is that 35 (Max) is best.
More choices = More Votes. I agree.
You left out the cartoon suggestion I gave you.
Guarantee you, it would have gotten votes.

I made a poll The Top 5 TV Dads rather quickly as the poll board members had no fathers day poll suggestions, and they were gonna use one of mine that I figured that would not get many votes. I whipped together a better one. Look at the results! The Cartoon is the #1 choice! Don't leave out choices just because "You Think" it may not fit. The advice may or may not work. You never know. I Expected Al Bundy as #1. Boy was I wrong. But after seeing a lot of polls, I have come to realize that I know nothing! LOL. Only the persons taking the poll know what they want. So don't leave out anything. Fill your polls up to 35 if you can. Sometimes you cannot. It is impossible based on the setup. I have some live polls that have only 15-20 choices, but it is a small amount. Most of mine are 35. Leaving out selections is OK when you have more than 35. But if less than 35, try out the weird suggestions. The results might be surprising.

You may wish to examine this chart.

Most polls have 35 choices. However, polls with 28 choices have the highest average number of polls. Polls with 25 choices has the next best average.

I'd like to see the same chart without the Home Page Polls.
I believe it skews the averages.
How are we to really compare one person against another persons averages unless the HPP's are removed.
Or compare the number of choices in a poll without HPP's

I'd really like to see this pages stats
http://mypollwatch.blogspot.com/2015/03/imdb-polls-votes-by-author.html

without the HPP or if you would just add a column for HPP cumulative per individual. Or the column you use for Max poll numbers could be converted to HPP cumulative. That way all of us could see how we stack up against one another based on regular page polls.

There is no consensus. We have had feedback over the years that 35 options is too much. It is a maximum, nothing else.

Exactly! Peter, you expressed my sentiments much better and more succinctly.

This conversation going off-topic. Any further discussion should be in a separate thread.

I'd add this. Just for S&Giggles add this as the last option to the list and ask for a re-push as an experiment. Do it now while the poll is new. It's too late if you wait till you are on page two or three.
The Sylvester Tweety Mysteries
115. The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries (1995–2001) 7.1/3,125
Sylvester Cat, Tweety Bird, and Hector the Bulldog are the pets of Granny, a gingerly matron with a penchant for solving mysteries. A re-push in case you don't know is explained here.

I added syl and tweety (earlier actually). I was actually surprised that the other detective polls were for British tv and us tv has been ignored.

Now check out this poll. I added an option for fun that had nothing to do with the Poll. It is #1! Go figure. Read the caption. The "Bah Humbug" option!!!!
Also the last on the list is a re-push example. Oh, this is one of my "Bad Polls" LOL

If you add a "none of the above" option of any sort, people may use it. Here's just one other example:

unfort it only has 1800 votes and not the 2k that I have as a cut-off. Originally it was in along with a few others until I increased the # of votes so as to cut the list down some.

Ed, I'm surprised, but your Sylvester and Tweety has gotten a couple votes. So thanks. Although only 100 votes in, the votes are definitely not going at all as I would have guessed. That's why they play the game.

101 votes is good for a poll with titles that old.
I did a newer one. It was images. That way I got to put in two couples from the same series that was popular. It had 442 votes by the time it was 5 weeks old.
But look at the top 5. #5 is a 59 year old series! That surprises me. You never know what is gonna get votes sometimes! The #1 did not surprise me though. Also I try to make polls now that have what I perceive a big vote count choice to begin with. And also try to figure out a poll that has as many good choices as possible. Sometimes a simple Face-Off Poll can surprise. Also an Image poll. Visualization can get you more votes in some cases.
