For each movie genre I selected one movie with these criteria: less than 100,000 votes, IMDb rating and Metascore between 7.0 and 8.0 and no Oscar or Golden Globe nominations. In the list you can see which actor stars in the particular movie and also you find more details about the movie.
Based on the given information, without knowing the title, which movie would you choose to watch?

My list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls093210346/

- Green Room, a Thriller starring Anton Yelchin, 7.0 IMDb rating and 79 Metacritic rating, no Oscar/GG nominations
- The Last Unicorn, an Animation movie starring Mia Farrow, with 7.5 IMDb rating and 70 Metacritic rating, no Oscar/GG nominations

Thanks! I watched the trailer from Brawl in Cell Block 99 when I made the list. I couldn’t say if this movie is action, crime or drama. So I didn’t know if it would fit in one of the genres. That’s why I didn’t choose this one.
The other two have a rating with 7.0 and I have picked movies above 7.0 and below 8.0.

Hoekkie: There is an error on the list. The Sean Astin film is listed as Sci-Fi, when it should be another genre instead.

I'd select Gregory Peck, Lee Marvin or Gleeson, in that order, the last 3 names on the list. They've often been more selective about the quality of what they were doing. I also like Tommy Lee Jones, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley for instance, but they've been in a lot of crap. There's no such thing as a Tommy Lee Jones movie, but when you say "Gregory Peck movie" it inspires a confidence in you that this will be a good one, without knowing anything else about the movie.

I thought that the movie genre would be the most important thing for the people to decide. But it seems that the actors will make the difference. I’m very curious...

Speaking purely personally, I go by people involved (director, writer and actors), era the movie is made in, and genre, in that order.

But of course that's not a strict rule. One must also keep an open mind, or how else can we discover cinematic gems that have eluded us for years?

A slight error - Calvary (2014) is not a Western.
