Live Poll: Comedies With Serious Titles

Some comedies like Being There (1979), Terms of Endearment (1983) or The Goodbye Girl (1977) can afford 'serious' titles because of their dramatic or realistic undertones, such movies tagged as comedy/dramas won't be considered for this poll.

So let's focus on comedies, plain comedies, whose titles seem to exude some 'dramatic', if not depressing, vibes, the contrast is too interesting to be ignored.

So, which of these comedic titles would inspire the bleakest or more depressing drama if it could be re-used?

ElMo,

This is an interesting concept for a poll.

For your consideration:
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
To Be or Not to Be (1942)

I thought about "Arsenic" when I made the list but I think there's such an incongruous contrast between 'arsenic' and 'old lace' that I can't think of a serious film having such a title, despite the macabre undertones. Would Hitchcock use a title like this? I don't know.

The other one is perfect.
I only know a couple of comedies 1 The Stupids 2 Serial stars both which is Christopher lee.

ElMo,

Thanks for adding To Be or Not to Be (1942).

For your consideration:
The Great Dictator (1940)
The Ugly Truth (2009)
Love and Death (1975)
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)
Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

Lol, maybe I'm being too subtle for the poll's own good but frankly, I find this title amusing because it states the obvious, it's like "murder by death".

I'm not looking for titles that contain serious or macabre words, but titles that could be used for dramas, if you can picture a drama with the same title without letting a little chuckle go, then it works.

This one made me laugh.

I imagined a gangster drama.

"Goodfellas", on the other hand, sounds like a comedy.

Aaah I see your point, that's why gangster films are tricky, there's always a very subtle element of 'fun' in the titles even when the films don't have the pretension to be comedies... it's the ironic 'noir' touch.  Your "Goodfellas" reminded me of Danny De Vito's "Wise Guys" (the reason why the original Nicholas Pileggi's title couldn't be used) Ebert and Siskel loved that comedy... maybe it could work for the poll.

I think I'll change the text intro, it was too misleading.

I made the changes and removed two of my initial suggestions, crime-related titles don't serve the purpose of this poll, I prefer to focus on 'existential' titles, that's where the contrast is more amusing.

Are we talking of John Huston's movie?

Man, this is one of the funniest movies of the 50s, even funnier than some self-proclaimed comedies, it's just criminally underrated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuIJUvz5hvI

It's not even a dramedy, here are a few priceless exchanges:

- You will make restitution, will you no, Mr. Dann? Either the money or a new car.
- Why, you fat bandit, I gave you the car in the first place.
- How I came by it is beside the point. The fact you gave it to me doesn't make it any the less mine.
- Harry, we must beware of these men. They are desperate characters.
- What makes you say that ?
- Not one of them looked at my legs!
- This generation's had its chance. Hitler, Mussolini, those were the men. Now is the age of the barbarians.
-I believe you must have Arab blood. Westerners are not usually so subtle. (the whole sequence in the Arabian country had me rolling on the floor)
Maybe neither Huston or Capote intended it as a comedy, but then it's an accidental masterpiece.
