Which of these decades do you think was the best for the animated movies?

Nice, but maybe could use 1890's (Autour d'une cabine), 1900's (Fantasmagorie),1910's (Gertie the Dinosaur) and 1920's (Steamboat Willie) as well?..

I would have suggested 1880's as well, but unfortunately Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince never dabbled in animation and he was virtually ONLY director from that era. :)

Thanks NY,

At first, I planned to include all decades including pre-1930s. Later, I was having hard time to find at least 3 known animated movies from those decades. So, I decided to start from 1930s.

Well, examples I have suggested are mostly really known if not iconic for their decades. I mean, first appearance of Mickey Mouse and first on-screen dinosaur!

I have a few remarks:

- The problem with sticking with animated movies is that you can't really reason in terms of decade, it started in the late 30's, then stopped at the mid-40's. Regular productions of animated movies started in the 50's and even then... I mean you can mostly reason in terms of periods : Golden Age (1937-1942), Disney first Renaissance (1950-1959), the XEROX period (1961-1977), the decline of American animation and the rise of Miyazaki in the 80's, the Disney Renaissance (1989-1999) etc-etc.

- The decades distinction is relevant if we include the cartoons and the TV animated classics but then it would be harder to know which examples to include.

- If you want to stick to movies, then I don't think it's enough to have only 3 movies, some were so significant that overlooking one movie with create a bias. You can just list all the 10 highest rated animated films of the decades (or the most popular), it won't take more than three lines if you write them one after another.  By doing so, you might found some animated gems that aren't even from Disney or Ghibly studios.

- if you still want to stick to three movies because you don't want to fill your list with titles, then may I suggest you don't write the title that corresponds to the defining image, since you already have "The Lion King" for the 90's, you can have:

Beauty and the Beast

Toy Story

Princess Mono-noke

If it's feature films only then I'll vote 80's. If it includes shorts and everything else than I'll vote 40's
