To be perfectly honest Citizen Kane is only Welles's FEATURE FILM debut, but it is still hard to beat.

Well, I should have made it clear in the question but that's what I meant: feature film debut, I don't think any of them was 100% newcomer when making the debut, they had all made their bones directing-wise before their breakthrough on the big screen ;)

It is clear enough, it's just that I can't help but talk about that A LOT. :) Many directors actually have at least three debuts: a short film, then a feature which was not widely distributed or seen and then a proper feature film. Sometimes there is a fourth debut as some directors have both amateur and professional short films. Plus in some cases there are unfinished and lost movies which make the equation even more difficult.
