Live Poll: Favorite Dustin Hoffman Movie

He graduated in 1967 and dusted off the standards and rules of Hollywood
leading man. In 1969, he was walking here and in 1976, he was actually running. Whether "Rain", "Marathon" "Little Big" or one "of the President's", he was the MAN... though in 1982, he admitted he was a better man with a woman, as a woman... than he ever was as a man.

Anyway, on the 8th day of the 8th month, beloved star method actor Dustin Hoffman is celebrating his 80th birthday. On this occasion, or celebrating the 50th anniversary of his breakthrough role, or the 20th anniversary of his last Oscar-nominated performance, let's have a look at his leading, co-leading or scene-stealing supporting roles in movies.

Which of Dustin Hoffman's roles is your favorite?

great poll sdk...

as for his movies, i love 'papillion'...and as for my favorite film of his, it would definitely be 'all the president's men' where he played one of my heroes, carl bernstein...but...since you are looking specifically for my favorite role he played, it would have to be ratzo rizzo in 'midnight cowboy'...

80 is always impressive.

I might vote for Last Chance Harvey. He is co-starring with Emma Thompson again in the new Noah Baumbach film.

Hoffman's birthday is coming soon, but I'd like to know if the title for this poll sounds too weird or if it works. Thanks.

Puns and other clever titles are okay, but a simpler title referencing the birthday or the poll question might work better and attract more voters.

My three big favorite actors all have August birthdays so it's easy to remember the approximate time but, this year, I forgot, so thanks for reminding me with this fun poll. . It's a difficult question but two of my all time favorite films are Kramer vs. Kramer and All the President's Men so one of those. The intro cracks me up and is really good, btw; bravo. :)

And another ultra-creative intro; the man is the king at those! The 'Clark Gable' of poll introductions :)

He’s one of my favorite actors to watch, but he’s not perfect by any means. He’s crossed the line on overacting and crewing the scenery that makes it uncomfortable to watch. Ishtar, Outbreak, Sphere, Hook, Billy Bathgate, Hero, Mad City just to name a few. I love Rainman (which took everything in my being to watch because I despise Tom Cruise). Tootsie, All the President’s Men, Little Big Man, Marathon Man, Lenny, Papillion, Sleepers, Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Runaway Jury (loved the scene with Gene Hackman) and I own most of them on DVD and watch them frequently. I haven’t seen all his movies, though because some are hard to find. I think he got his reputation for being "difficult" because he's a perfectionist and always believes he can do better; because he cares too much about the project, probably too much; and he's an admitted control freak, who needs to control everything on a set. But, I look at his career over the years and I think he is one of the most diverse actors around. Ratso, Benjamin, Ted Kramer, Jack Crabb, Lenny Bruce, Carl Bernstein (although at times in the film he overacted in some of his scenes) Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels, Louis Dega, Raymond Babbitt (and I think it was his most disciplined role to date), Thomas "Babe" Levy (I still find it hard to watch the drilling scene. It happened to me and I knew that pain) and I hear he gave an amazing performance as David Sumner in Straw Dogs which I haven't seen yet. I was far too young to see the film when it came out. He’s a method actor, very intense but I was horrified to learn that he slapped Meryl Streep in the face because she wasn’t giving him enough raw emotion in the scene. So, that look on her face of shock was very real.
