On the 1945 Academy Awards there was a strange one time occurrence, Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both a leading and a supporting actor for the same role as Father Fitzgibbon

After watching the film, do you consider his role to be leading or supporting?

And old suggestion from the previous message boards. While I suppose it will never get many votes as it is a little seen film today, I like it very much, it is a very hard to answer question for anyone that has seen this oscar winner.

Screentime didn't even matter, he was typically the scene-stealing character actor in a movie dominated by its romantic lead. Definitely supporting.

What enrages me though is that he could have been nominated in Leading, but  his Supporting nomination probably stole the spot that Edward G. Robinson would have occupied for his Oscar worthy performance in Double Indemnity.

I have a copy of the film. He is clearly in a supporting role as Crosby has most of the screen time and story line too.

Well, when I posted this last year in the old message boards opinions were much more divided.

I remember the main argument for leading was the the most important and final part of the film was all about Father Fitzgibbon character.

The links in the intro of the list seem to have come "unlinked."

Indeed they have. One of them was going to a now dissapeared character page, the others were linked in a way no longer supported, this is a 2014 suggestion so it has been there for a while.

All of them are corrected now.
