Live Poll: Face-Off: French Gore Films of the 2000s

These three horror films have a lot in common. They were all released in the 2000s. They were all filmed in French. They all have an IMDB rating higher than 6.5. They all feature human antagonists.... And, of course, none of them shy away from the excessive use of gore and graphic violence.

Which of these films is your favorite?

Interesting idea groovyvic!

Haven't seen any but Martyrs (2008) looks interesting.

Thanks!  Martyrs is in my top 10.  It manages to be complete torture porn and simultaneously one of the most psychologically intelligent horror movies that I can think of

Martyrs has an immense fanbase and cult following. I'm still yet to see it, though, oddly enough.

I study Business Administration with a co-op option as we're one of the only schools in Canada which offers it, which is great!

Would love to pursue a path in entertainment in the future though (maybe take the business-route into the industry).

How about you, Groove?

Ooo! That's an awesome plan. I'm taking forensic psychology and thinking the same about the future- maybe do a couple crime/psychology documentaries on the side while working in private practice and see where it goes from there

Wow, that sounds really cool! I'd love to see your approach to those documentaries... I've always found crime psychology to be fascinating... shows like Mindhunter (2017–) are great because they allow you to peer into that mindset.

Who knows, maybe we'll find ourselves working together in film one day - how cool that would be!

I'm not overly into the fictional crime shows because of the inaccuracies, but some are alright. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist on Netflix. It's about a pizza guy who got a bomb strapped to his neck and was told to rob a bank, and about the people who did it. And it's definitely a show where you want to go in without watching the trailer; it gives away too much.

And that'd be sick.

I like how oddly specific poll suggestion is. There was definitly a brief new wave of horror in France in mid-2000's.

FYC:
Amer (2009), a French-Belgian homage to Italian giallo subgenre.
Frontière(s) (2007)
La horde (2009)

There is a minimum rating of 6.5.

Do you know the term/article New French Extremity?

Haven't seen it entirety yet, so I'm not sure whether violence goes to extreme in this one.

I was vaguely aware that there was a new wave of French horror in 2000's, but not that it fits in a larger wave of transgressive movies in general. That's quite interesting.

It was very specific because I wanted to make it a face-off poll which has a maximum of 3 options. I put the minimum of 6.5 to exclude Frontier(s) which is basically the french 'Hostel' in order to get it down to 3. I was going back and forth on including Frontier(s) or not; it would get votes but I doubt it would win.  I also added an additional similarity of the 3 movies to my list description; that all of them feature 2 females as the main characters. I like the idea of having just a few films with very similar ratings and a lot of things in common for a favourites poll, because the votes will be based largely on plot and execution rather than people's natural preferences for certain styles/subgenres. I like that its actually not obvious in this case who will win (although I think Inside has a disadvantage because of having less votes on IMDB)

That makes sense. It's a good face-off. I'm not sure which one I would vote for.

If they would've just gotten a bit more touchy-feely during Inside they would've all been about lesbians too

I'll take Inside because of Director, Julien Maury. The dude's got a twisted sense of humor.

Ah, well ideally you're supposed to make the decision based only on the movies in the poll. But if they're all relatively equal to you anyways then favouritism is acceptable

I use several things to determine what I watch. The Stars. The co stars. Importantly the Director. You can have the best stars but poor direction and or writing can make a pic unwatchable. I saw a comedy short by Julien and liked it. A lot. I married my wife because of favoritism. She liked my friends! Then, I liked Her. Have not seen Inside but I will now.

It's not asking what you want to watch, it's asking what your favourite movie is. You def can't choose Inside as your favourite without even watching it. It's a good movie but the characters are idiots.

groovyvic,

I contacted the IMDb Editors regarding your poll suggestion, since we try to keep the polls suitable for a general audience. They recommend changing the title of your poll suggestion.

Paraphrasing their response:
Although “Splatter Films” is the correct/known title for that subgenre the subject matter itself is not very family friendly/R-rated. Perhaps ask Groovy to change the title to:
French Gore Films of the 2000s

Other than the title, the IMDb Editors had no problem with the content of your poll suggestion.

groovyvic,

The markup language was for the message board hosted on IMDb. Sadly this markup languages does not work on Get Satisfaction. Get Satisfaction does not provide a means to change the color of text.

On a Windows PC:
Save Image to hard drive.
1. Right click the image.
2. Select "Save Image as..."
3. Save to a specific folder.

Post image on Get Satisfaction.
1. Click camera icon.
2. Upload Image:To upload an image, drag & drop here or select a file from your computer
