Live Poll: Face-Off: Hollywood Pain vs. B-Pain

I think we all agree that certain film projects can be so bad, they are actually unpleasant to watch. While they can be made entertaining by laughing at them, perhaps with the help of the guys and gals at RiffTrax, on their own they are simply torture!

But there can be different kinds of awful cinema. The bad B-movies have cheap effects, terrible actors, and sloppy editing. Bad films from Hollywood's studios may have more of a budget for visuals and stars, but the dumb plot, over-the-top tendencies, and even cringey performances from the famous can be just as agonizing.

So the question is, which type of shoddy entertainment is worse: stuff from Hollywood or stuff from low budget creators?

  • They re-edited 'Cats?' Good grief! They didn't even do that for 'Batman and Robin!' How bad was it?!?!?!?

I would say both are equally bad (from a movie watcher's standpoint) but the thing which makes bad Hollywood film worse, is when they make a lot of money.

Hollywood, I can laugh off a bad low budget movie way more often. A bad Hollywood movie just feels more empty and lacking in effort.

Totally agree, guys.  I can see why low-budget movies are bad (because they're low budget, duh!) but Hollywood bad movies make me mad is how the people with millions of dollars to spend still blew it!

With passion projects done on little to no budget you at least can see what went wrong and most of the time heart is in the right place. Obviously, executive mangled Hollywood properties would be my choice, simply because it's a bigger and unforgivable problem.

Hopefully, situation is getting better for talented people in the mainstream, as well. Harvey Weinstein is an offender in more ways than one, but even before his perverted escapades went super public in 2017, he was notorious for derailing interesting movies into barely recognizable as something that originally was of artistic value. Prime examples are Dust Devil (1992) (only received a drastically different director's cut in 2006 after rights fell through and director was able to make and finance one himself) and The Crow: City of Angels (1996). Latter's theatrical cut was broken to such a point that if you want to watch a version approved by the director that would be a fan edit which reconstructs original vision from scratch using several workprints of varying quality and sometimes just storyboard sequences...

With Weinstein out of picture and overall slow change studios start to allow for more smaller projects having creative freedom. It just recently hit the news that theatrical cut of The New Mutants (2020) is going to be director's original vision, so they decided to scrap all the reshoots they did, which delayed the release. Ridiculous? To a point: at least we will see the original movie, as it was intended.

P.S. Oops, sorry for an accidental rant.

Nia,

It probably means you are not getting your 15 to 18 hours of sleep per day.

15-18 hour sleep is possible with humans too and is called hypersomnia. I suffer from this from time to time and I can say that you might actually feel worse than in case of insomnia. Latter also happens with me from time to time and is not pleasant by any stretch, but in case of insomnia you don't wake up as crushed as in cases of hypersomnia. That is if you get any sleep, because depending on severity, insomniacs either have microsleeps of few seconds to minutes through the course of the day or small sleep attacks of 20 minutes which won't last long but can qualify as sleep.

My cat, unlike my other cats I've had, has never slept nearly as much as other cats do and I tend to need much more sleep than other humans so my little household conflict has always been that I sleep too much for my cat's liking, lol.

NarniaisAwesome, great thanks! Adding that to my "to watch" list, likely for next year.

Also, I always watch until the end of end credits, even when I know there's nothing there. I just love seeing/reading credits. :)

Spammed?  It's not spam if it's something of interest to the other person.  Nikolay has an interest in terrible movies (lol) and I thought I'd share what I came across the other day.  Users share things like that all the time; links to sites or videos that are on topic.

NarniaisAwesome, interestingly, Rollergator (1996) is perhaps the least known movie on this list. It's basically in a company of legends in this post.
