The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a new category at the Oscar ceremony; 'Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film'. It seems they made this concession because of the scant representation of popular/blockbuster movies at the Oscars. The last blockbuster movie that won the Oscar for Best Picture was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).
What do you think about this new Oscar category?
1. I'm happy about this new category. I think it's a smart move.
2. I don't like this new category. I think they shouldn't add this new category.

i'm not crazy about the idea...basically this category just says that they weren't very good movies but alot of people liked them...what does that say about the people who went to see them...
it bows down to those who criticized movies like 'wonder woman' not be nominated...
however...it didn't deserve to be nominated...make a good movie and it should be nominated...popular or not...

Not to be pedantic, but the category basically says that they weren't the best movies but people paid to attend them the most, since "the best" hardly means "the only good" and does not necessarily mean good at all in the event of none of the options in a selection from which to choose being good. There have been some years, perhaps from a purist minority point of view, in which no good movies were released in California cinema.

Vague and useless category. If the Academy feels that 'popular movies' (whatever that means) are not represented enough at the Oscars, they should start to nominate them for the awards that already exist. If those popular movies don't deserve those real awards, then the new one is just a consolation prize.

Besides, "Best Stunt Choreography" could honor 'popular movies' (if that means blockbusters and genre movies) in a meaningful way. It would help hard-working and creative crew members come into the limelight, and we would know exactly what achievement is awarded.

Other than the tweet from the AMPAS twitter account, there is very little information on the new category 'Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film' on the official AMPAS (Oscars) web site.

Change is coming to the #Oscars. Here's what you need to know:
- A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film.
- We've set an earlier airdate for 2020: mark your calendars for February 9.
- We're planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast.
The official rules for 91st Annual Academy Awards of Merit makes no mention of the category:

At first glance, this sounds like a horrible idea. This reminds me of a category from the People's Choice Awards.

This is a desesperate move from the Oscars to increase their viewers.
If they think this movies are good, nominating them on the categorys that are already here. It will be more prestigious.
They want so bad to put Black Panther and Avengers to won something big. This is one of the bad decisions that Oscar's are doing in the Last years.
Last year it's all about #metoo , a few years ago about the racism...

They call themselves "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences" but they seem to favor artistic achievements over technical ones, but that's probably why "arts" is named before "sciences".

I made that remark because of how the original Star Wars, a major technical achievement, was passed over in favor of Annie Hall.

Annie Hall is one of my least favorite "greatest" films, and now I have another reason to hate it. :(

To be fair, I cannot judge Annie Hall, since I've not even seen it. I do know a little bit about it, though. In my mind, it doesn't help that the film stars Woody Allen in addition to being plotted and directed by him. No affront to the man meant, but maybe he primarily belongs behind the camera.

Bad idea. And I'm against it, I'm also against having some categories awarded outside the tv broadcast

Hoekkie
I read that in a news article.

To me, The Shape of Water is 'popular film'. Although perhaps not a blockbuster, it was in the box office top 50.
