Live Poll: Fallen Lady Liberty

The statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel, it was given to the United States by the people of France in 1886, to represent the friendship between the two countries established during the American Revolution. Since then, it has become an emblem of American hopes and dreams, a gateway sign for both New York City and America.

Over the years, we've seen Lady Liberty getting destroyed and damaged in many movies.

To you, what was the most iconic fall of her?

Great poll suggestion!

It's interesting that the situation was only depicted on the poster of Escape From New York, never in the movie itself, but become rather iconic and the moment in Cloverfield was an intentional homage to the poster.

Ghostbusters II (not exactly fallen; it walks away)

තරිඳු ධනංජය/Mr Tharindu,

I also thought of suggesting Ghostbusters II. Lady Liberty walking may be a borderline case. Please do not feel obligated to add if this does not fit your concept of your poll.

Good point. The PS does emphasize a fallen state of being. In Ghostbusters II, the busters probably put the statue back after they were done with "her".

By showing ruins of the statue, these movies implies that liberty and freedom of the country/world has been destroyed.

Even though it isn't related to this idea, movie - 2012(2009) shows Redeemer statue in Rio breaking into pieces suggesting the ending in religious beliefs.

But as Breumaster has said, I think there aren't enough options to vote on.
So I will inlude Nikolay's idea too. :D

This is also a subject in the Deus Ex games and the Judge Dredd comics (along with the 1995 film and 1997 game). I wonder where I'd be able to sang a screenshot of the outside of the statue as it is in the hokey adaptation directed by Danny Cannon; something not even so much as hinted at the better adaptation directed by Pete Travis.

I like the idea. 7 options seem a little small. I hope there will be more suggestions.

I googled for it and I found out following movies have destroyed liberty too.

Batman Forever (1995)Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (2005)
X-Men
Godzilla: Final Wars
Batman Forever
Judge Dredd
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
I will include some of these movies in the list if I can find related images in IMDb.

The statue was literally defaced in Batman Forever. Maybe in X-Men too, if I recall correctly. The damage would be considered minor compared to what happened in Cloverfield. I don't remember what happened to the statue in Superman IV, even though I used to watch it frequently back in the late 1980s. (Maybe something happened to the torch?) In Judge Dredd, the political system that had emerged sometime in the "third millennium" had moved the statue to downtown Manhattan or something, no repairs being done to the gaping holes throughout the surface of the statue.

I actually wanted to suggest X-Men, but apart from very mild damage, mostly done to torch of all elements statue was mostly unharmed in that movie. At least that's how I remember it, it might be more severe.

In X-Men, a hole was opened up in the statue's crown/forehead, and Logan also wound up slicing off one of the aureole of the crown.

As you can see, some of the images on my IMDb list were taken from this page.

Is it against IMDb standards? :/

Wow, what a timely poll in a metaphorical way. I don't know if that was intentional but, being an American, that's what I thought of immediately, unfortunately: the words at the base of the statue and what she symbolizes being betrayed in my country by some -- of by one, with some following. 'Very sad. Anyway, it's a very good poll and even more interesting to me because of the timing.

I'm having a hard time choosing among the films, in terms of most iconic, but maybe 'Planet of the Apes' or "Escape from NewYork.'

May I suggest four edits to the otherwise excellent intro? (They're below in bold.)

Timely? Aw. As long as an excuse for Congress to suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus cannot be found, he won't be doing much (irreparable) harm in the liberty department, and as always, the courts provide survivors the chances to redress their grievances in an orderly manner, even if a greater portion of the judges than usual are "strict constructionists". The real catch is that people have slightly varying ideas about the meanings and connotations of liberty.

Well, the pedestal inscription presenting the words of The New Colossus might be a point of controversy right now. The United States may not be able to live up to implied spirit.

"Might not be able to" is not at all what I was thinking. "Is able to" but "is not" is more like it. If the words of "The New Colossus' are a point of controversy, right now, among Americans, indeed much damage has already been done on just that front, not to mention countless others. Even if the "redress of grievances" were less of an abstraction and more of a reality, it does not assuage me in the least as I watch, daily, the assaults to morality and democracy. It's a chilling experience to watch one's country act against its own ideals with such frequency and abandon.

Back to the subject of polls: Mr. Tharindu, before polls go live, you can always make revisions and edits to any part of a list, including the intro. Some changes can even be made after a poll goes live by requesting a "re-push." (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/faq-poll-authors-re-push-requests?topic-reply-list[settings]... )  :)
