It's interesting to see how everybody seems to choose a different Ron Howard movie. This might indicate either that Ron Howard movies have a constant high standard or just simply that there's not a single movie that jumps out from the rest.

leavey-2,

My vote:
Apollo 13 (I) (1995)

By the way, Ron Howard was originally slated to direct Changeling (2008).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changeling_(film)#Development
J. Michael Straczynski
's agent passed the script to producer Jim Whitaker. He forwarded it to Ron Howard,[14] who optioned it immediately.[11]

In June 2006, Universal Studios and Howard's Imagine Entertainment bought the script for Howard to direct. The film was on a shortlist of projects for Howard after coming off the commercial success of The Da Vinci Code.[15] In March 2007, Universal fast-tracked the production. When Howard chose Frost/Nixon and Angels & Demons as his next two directing projects, it became clear he could not direct Changeling until 2009.[16] After Howard stepped down, it looked as if the film would not be made, despite admiration for the script in the industry.[17] Howard and Imagine partner Brian Grazer began looking for a new director to helm the project;[18] they pitched the film to Eastwood in February 2007,[9] and he agreed to direct immediately after reading the script.[19] Eastwood said his memories of growing up during the Great Depression meant that whenever a project dealing with the era landed in his hands, he "redoubled his attention" upon it.[20] Eastwood also cited the script's focus on Collins—rather than the "Freddy Krueger" story of Northcott's crimes—as a factor in deciding to make the film.[9]

Thanks for the information, Dan. Ron Howard is listed as co-producer in Changeling (2008), but I didn't know he was supposed to direct it. It would have been a different movie under his direction, I think.

leavey-2,

Eastwood made only two minor changes to the screenplay. I suspect that Ron Howard would have made quite a few more. I agree that the pacing of the film would have been different if Ron Howard directed it.

I'm a big fan of J. Michael Straczynski. I co-wrote most of the Wikipedia article on Changeling (2008) and the Wikipedia article on the case upon which it is based, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wineville_Chicken_Coop_murders.

I just read your Wikipedia article. Very interesting. I didn' t know this movie was based on a real case. Apparently Angelina Jolie was cast for the movie at Ron Howard's suggestion and not Hilary Swank or Reese Witherspoon who both lobbied for the role of Christine Collins because Jolie's "look" would fit best with the time period.

He's made some great movies although I think my favourite of his is A Beautiful Mind (2001). It's a really emotional yet profoundly moving movie and the first time I saw it I was blown by the film's main reveal!

Thanks, James. Russell Crowe's Oscar nomination for this movie was well deserved.

'Good poll. 'Frost/Nixon' was quite good but I think that 'The Paper' was his best, by far.

I noticed a little typo:
