What film franchise do you think will be the first to have a sequel 100 years after creation?

Hope we will be able to see these in Dolby V.R. (Virtual Reality!)

It depends what constitutes a franchise, because if remakes count...

Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900), first ever cinematic appearance of Sherlock Holmes was remade 104 years later.
And both original and remake are definitely worth a watch, so...

I guess it's one of those cases when remake might be a bit better. :)

A film series, film franchise, movie series, or movie franchise is a collection of related films in succession that share the same fictional universe, or are marketed as a series. That single Movie, was it part of a series?

Ed Jones (XLIX), nope, unfortunately, although in wider term I've heard franchise being used for remakes, as well. After all, they often capitalize on familiarity of original title and characters...

Not pursuing you to add it, it's just that I find the fact of 1900 and 2004 versions existing utterly fascinating. :)

For purists 1900 and 2004 are not in the S.H. Universe. 1939s Basil Rathbone's Sherlock IS Holmes!

Ed Jones (XLIX), for Post-Soviet purists Vasiliy Livanov is Holmes to such a point that nearly nothing compares.

No, really, some (including a popular fan site) go as far as to call Soviet mini-series franchise "Film", with capital "F" and forbid everyone to call it "serial" (which is a main word for TV series in Ukrainian and Russian), because in their opinion it's disrespectful to call it anything else. Then again, we're talking about people whose discovery of existence of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" on their forum lead to them proclaiming it a typical American nonsense and a travesty because "you can't see and hear the real film". It is really interesting whether they saw any of the actual movies reviewed on MST3K, because I did and I can say that it's probably much easier to see most of those movies that way: it's a bit of a testament to sit through some of them as is. ;)

Anyhow, Livanov is indeed one terrific Holmes, out there with the greatest. And website is also nice, actually, an encyclopedia with an especially interesting read on filming locations which reverse-engineers the series' London and Great Britian as being mostly all over the USSR with like 2% of footage really filmed in UK (they managed to sneak some via correspondent who was there and filmed Thames on 8 mm). :)

Personally I never have warmed up to MST3K. While inventive, it's not inventive enough. Would like to experience Livanov's Holmes. But sadly a dubbed version of the series is probably not available. I so dislike captioning as it takes you away from acting nuances because you are distracted by reading.

Ed Jones (XLIX) I have no problem with subtitles, but that's just me, I get why it might be troublesome.

I guess it needs some research, but there might be a dubbed version of those: they were really popular and were shown in some English-speaking countries.

i see ice age and toy story.... does this not imply you count cartoons?
then transformers and many other movies started way earlier, because they started as comics then cartoons then cartoon movies.
they only became real life action movies after cgi development.

yes:
-king kong had a new movie in 2005 (not mentioned)
-xmen started in 2000 and the last one came out 2019, new one coming in 2020
-latest batman installment was 2017, new one on its way for 2021
-superman had his last movie in 2013, but a shared movie with justice league in 2017
-last movie of the bond franchise was : no time to die 2020 (hasnt released because of corona)
-there have been several frankenstein movies in the 21st century, take your pick(70+ years later just like kingkong)
-transformers last movie was 2017 last knight
-Gojira (godzilla has had multiple movies every 10 years since 1950)
godzilla is probably one of those stories that will continue for a thousand years
-ice age had new movies ofcourse... but this is cgi/cartoon...
if you count this... then you should also count transformers first MOVIE (the cartoon one)
-Men in black had new movies
-lord of the rings 2,3 the hobbit 1,2,3
-mad max 21st centruy installments.

it would be nice to list the year of the first movie and the year of the latest...
you did that with a few, but then kinkong 2005 gets no reference and also alot of movies that started 21st century have no latest movie date!

cheers
im rooting for the monsters: king kong and godzilla!

Godilla has been around since 1954 and is in the Guiness Book of World Records as the oldest running film series. There have been over 30 Godzilla movies released so to date, and more on the way. Could it be added to the poll?
There are a great many options already in it, if it's too late to add Godzilla.
