This is the second of a poll series whose purpose is to anticipate the inclusions in the next American Film Institute's Top 25, 50 or 100 lists. As you may know, many lists date back to the late 1990s and early 2000s and while the inclusions are satisfying, the absences severely date them.

After the villains, we're getting to the AFI's Top 50 heroes aired on 2003 with Maximus from Gladiator (2000) as the most recent character. So we'll consider movies from 2003 till today whose villains fit the AFI's criteria in terms of cultural impact: characters who have a made a mark on American society in matters of style and substance, and legacy: characters who elicit strong reactions across time, enriching America's film heritage while continuing to inspire contemporary artists and audiences.

In the eventuality of a new AFI's Top 50 heroes, which of these memorable post-2003 screen heroes, fictional or real, would be your top choice for an inclusion (as high as possible)?

Po is the most surprising in the list. A little odd in my opinion.
Would go with Milk.

Yeah, but Po from the second film was pretty bad-ass and had the toughest opponent of all, and his interactions with his mother added more depth to his character, he stopped to be the overweight sympathetic buffoon from the first film

I think you should add IronMan/Tony Stark to your Poll

he is one of the new greatest heroes in cinema history.

Adding humor and some flaws to make him look more human: he is a hero but he is not perfect and that makes IronMan a very special character to be included.

Plus this MCU Portrayal of the character has elevated the popularity of this hero worldwide, before the MCU IronMan was a B list hero and now thanks to Robert’s performance he is one of Thebes big favorites

'Great list, ElMo! I think it might even be better than the list of villains. 'Love this series of polls.

'Probably Harvey Milk but maybe the Boston Globe team.

I agree with Silitonga, though, about Po. Maybe the three women from Hidden Figures instead?

I will add the Hidden Figures but I insist on Po, here's why:

Thesequel gives an unexpected dimension to a character who was supposed to be droll and funny, as we have more glimpses on Po's past, we start to take the film more seriously than the first, 'Disney' serious.

Granted fun and action are integral to the franchise's appeal, but the origins of Po were enough to turn him into a fully three-dimensional character, the scene where he finally confronts his adoptive father carries some powerful emotionality.

And the dark flashback that reveals Po's past seals the coming-to-maturity of Disney's rival, Dreamworks, as even the buffoonish panda can make your heart melt. But DreamWorks animators have a talent of their own; they know how to 'copy Disney without copying it': in "Shrek", the Beauty becomes the Beast after the kiss of true love, in "Madagascar 2", Alex doesn't follow Simba's example and "remembers who he is", but sticks to what he is inside without any blood predestination.

In "Kung Fu Panda 2", when Po learns the truth, he doesn't jump to kill Shen, but finds the inner peace so he can dodge his secret weapon and uses the fireballs like drops of water (good call on the continuity). And there was more than a MacGuffin in that 'inner peace' thing, it showed that Po stayed true to himself; he defeated Shen but didn't want to kill him for what he did to his parents.

The team triumphed and Kung Fu will prosper, but more than that, Po declares his love to his friends and to his Dad, and the ending almost had me in tears... if it wasn't for the final cliff-hanger.

When you look at AFI's lists, many heroes and villains come from a sequel, it's not the original Ellen Ripley but the "Aliens" version who made it in the Top 10, it's Darth Vader from "The Empire Strikes Back" who was listed... I couldn't take Po from the first or third film seriously but in the second, he's got all the makings of a hero.
