Ed, if I didn't have grey hair already............
Jimi Hendrix the guitar equilibrist who has inspired so many succeeding him - or 'Old Slowhand' who has mastered the art of playing guitar like no others. - And then I can't help looking for BB King although it may be argued that he played more blues than rock.

Well, I don't know, I thought I'd leave that up to you. But definitely not Satriani. :)
(And it's okay if you can't fit him in.)

Jessica, I read his bio. I am not familiar with Steve or the Dixie Dregs from the 1970's
But his overall contribution impressed me.
Recommend some of his music and guitar work that I should listen to.
Kinda feel stupid not knowing who he was, being a D.J. and also being the same age as Steve!!!
:):)
I put him in at #14
Cheers
Ed

I actually haven't listened that much to the Dregs or Steve Morse myself, but I know he's a great guitarist, so thank you for adding him. :)
The Dixie Dregs are an instrumental jazz rock band; here is their first album from 1976:

I also found this solo by Steve that demonstrates his skills:

Perhaps add Neal Schon of Journey? They were around in the 70's, not to mention the even earlier work he did.

This choice is so, so difficult. I can't make up my mind between five.
Can you change "thru" to "through?" Thanks, Ed. :)

I'm not music expert enough to judge who is really the best, but my favorite is David Gilmour with his crying guitar.
