Maybe because it's the most naturally 'hostile' or anxiety-inducing season, a wintery (or cold and snowy) environment creates an ideal combination with the thrills and scares of the horror genre.

Which of these horror/winter movies is your favorite?

The Thing is one of my all time favs, but shout out to the original The Thing from Another World as well.

I didn't like the original, the ending is classic but the pace is too slow and the acting too campy even by 50's standards, as a classic as it is, I think "The Day The Earth Stood Still", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or "The Incredible Shrinking Man" are far superior movies. Even the monster is kind of lame when you start to look at the scenes repetitively. Anyway, just what I think about the film :)

Have you tried watching it in winter, with all your windows open, while it's freezing outside? Trust me, it's an amazing experience. You practically feel the cold and fear the characters are experiencing.

The Thing by a mile. The cold is not just the setting, it's like a character in the film.

Actually it may be the middle of summer, I don't know.
