These movies are known to be divided; either you LOVE the movie or you HATE the movie. Which movie do you really LOVE (and don't deserve the HATE)?

My list: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls068186284/

The list started well, but I'm not too sure about some inclusions, I never heard about Being John Malkovich being a polarizing movie, and Big Fish could be criticized for being overly sentimental but not so bad it deserved to be hated. As for Dumb and Dumber, I don't think it's relevant to add a mindless silly comedy for that poll.

When we talk of "love it/hate it" movies, there's an element of seriousness in the film's premise that can only elicit a strong response, whether positive or negative. We're not supposed to take such comedies seriously, Jackass is an exception because it's not a fiction, people get hurt for real and the 'influence' the program has on people can be perceived as something worthy of either praise or disgust, same with Borat because it raises a few controversial points (the elements of seriousness I mentioned).

If it was up to me, I would add almost every David Lynch or Terry Gilliam's movie or at least
Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Brazil.

For your consideration:
Kick-Ass
I Am Sam
Ghostbusters (2016)
Inglourious Basterds
Rules of Engagement
The Life of David Gale
How the West Was Won
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Thanks for the feedback.
I agree with you for the most part. But I do think this list can contain comedies. The Holy Grail for example is a Love it/Hate it film. It's a kind of humor that's not appreciated by all. I didn't add this one because I want to avoid high rated (Top250) movies.
I removed: Friday, Big Fish, Dumb and Dumber, Being John Malkovich, Lost Highway
I added: Punch-drunk Love, Avatar, Blue Velvet, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Kick Ass.

I want to keep variation in the list, that's why I add only one Lynch film.

I humbly disagree about Holy Grail being a love it/ hate it film. I see your point, this brand of humor must be your cup of tea in order to enjoy it, but Holy Grail is a rather accessible movie. I mean, to go as far as hating a comedy, means three things in my opinion:

- you didn't laugh at all
- controversy (politics and/or religion)
- too graphic (sex, violence)

Life of Brian might be more divisive because it touches a very sensitive subject, but Holy Grail, i can't imagine someone, even with the most snobbish tastes, not enjoy the film or not even find it mildly amusing. I don't know.

There's a comedy I personally hated, it's MASH, I don't know if it fits your poll, but I hated its mean-spirited attitude and while I don't consider myself a feminist, I hated how they treated "Hot Lips" from beginning to the end (and at the end, she becomes a stereotypical dumb blonde and we never know why).

I'm one of those people who hate The Holy Grail. I didn't laugh. I think it was kind of stupid. But maybe you're right and most people are amused by this movie. I don't know.
I didn't see MASH. I've made my list to Google a lot on love/hate movies. For far as I know, MASH wasn't mentioned. Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't add this one.

I share some of the above commenter's sentiments, but would ultimately vote for Fear and Loathing or Natural Born Killers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought of this one, but I already have Man of Steel. And I want to keep variation. I haven't seen both of them. If you think Batman v Superman is a better option I will exchange them

For me, BvS would be a better option than MoS if only because I have a much stronger opinion of it. Man of Steel I was just kind of apathetic about.

I have only seen 5 of these movies and didn't really 'love' any of them but I 'liked':

Mars Attacks (it always makes me laugh)

Dogma

Drive (2011), Interesting poll idea, I know the feeling you are referring to; Wondering what the all the fuss is about or what you are missing that others see in a particular movie or why it is so highly rated.

The question is which movie you really LOVE? And I guess you mentioned a movie you hate. Thanks for the suggestions. Good options. Maybe I can use them for a part 2 poll.

Perhaps "divisive" is better than "divided"?

I really loved Lost in Translation.

I really love Lost in Translation, Tree of Life, and Blue Velvet.

I did hate Natural Born Killers, and there are some that I haven't seen but several of these films are more "middling" for me: I don't love or hate them (for example Benjamin Button; I like Drive a lot but some really seem just pretty ok), but I do know that a lot of these films are divisive - I don't really get it, though.

'Good poll.

I agree with Peter: divisive is definitely the word. The films aren't actually divided; the response to them is.

Congrats for the poll but really, some inclusions don't really strike me as "divisive", for me 'bad taste' can be divisive when it involves very controversial material because when it's played for laughs, it can't really be love or hate, many viewers can be  indifferent or  just mildly amused. I mean, Ted, really, it's not a movie that can't inspire reservations or warm critics? I think there has to be an element of cultural importance or social significance for the film to be polarizing.

Titanic was one of them in the sense that many viewers hated it because of its extraordinary box-office success

I think I would have focused on more controversial movies, some that raised a very sensitive chord, like Passion of the Christ or La Vie d'Adèle, the 2012 Palme d'Or winner wasn't controversial because of the lesbian romance but the overuse of very graphic sex scenes that confined to voyeurism according to many voices, including LGBT ones. Last Tango in Paris was a pretty polarizing movies or Caligula

I agree with a lot with Peter and you SDK ELMaruecan. But I want to expand the point further by saying that not only were there people who were jealous of some film's success, but they were also jealous of the director's success. I remember one troll, who I had proven that he had over twenty sock puppets on the IMDb. He praised any film by Spielberg and ripped apart anything Cameron or Scorsese made. He also ripped apart film series like Harry Potter, or Power Rangers and praised The Chronicles of Narnia or Super Senzei. I mean every posts on those boards was constantly comparing Narnia to Potter, Power Rangers to Super Senzei . Even going down to comparing the actors' talent and looks with some pretty childish attacks. I had figured the guy did it for attention.
Sometimes, others had their own bais because they were apart of some organization and the leader of that group said this or that film was bad.
So don't dismiss the work of trolls or the influence groups with an agenda.

Thanks for your reaction SDK ELMaruecan. I know what you mean, but I still think that comedy's can be divisive. I understand and agree that Bad Taste or other movies you mentioned are more polarizing. But I think I created a good list with well known, but unusual movies. Not all the movies can be divisive for everyone. I like to make a part 2 poll in the future. Maybe than I will choose more controversial movies.

No problem, you didn't take the "polemical" angle and that's all, the list was still consistent within your personal vision of what makes a movie divise.:)

Many of these choices I was pretty middled by. I just didn't have strong feeling about them one way or the other, or my feelings were all over the place leading to a more apathetic view.

There are also a few films on here I rather like—two of which I love: SnowpiercerScott Pilgrim vs. the World

I didn't think Scott Pilgrim was all too polarizing. It was among fans of the graphic novel and different age groups somewhat, but it didn't seem that dire to me.

But my vote will go to Snowpiercer. I see it as an astoundingly original sci-fi thriller with inventive action and an intricate Orwellian theory of power. It's a satirical powerhouse. I can see how it turns people off, but it seems to me that the people who hate it don't usually have much more than a surface-level understanding of it. (A totally clichéd thing to say, but I don't know how else to say it).

Had the list not gone live I'd have suggested Swiss Army Man and The Lobsterboth of which I love, but really didn't resonate with some. Also maybe Melancholia, Gravity, and maybe Sunshine

Not many of the films on there I hated. Tree of Life I rather disliked, but as strong as my feelings were about that film there's a non-negligible minority of good feelings too. Had Man of Steel been replaced by Batman v Superman, I would have hated that with a passion though.
