I have a few questions/suggestions.
What do you mean with 'hard sci-fi'?
Some movies are playing in cinema's already. So I think maybe this question is (to) late.
I should delete 'poll suggestion' in your description.
I should change the title into: Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Movie of 2017.

"Hard sci-fi" is science fiction that focuses on tangible scientific concepts, or are more reflective/allegorical.

As for the timing, the voter can always just vote for whichever one they were anticipating the most. That way films that have already come out are still eligible. It's just for 2017 in general.

Hi TheDoppel,

Please move the choices with images into the first five choices. I recommend that you use the images that crop the best into those first five choices. The grid view is a good approximation of the cropping for the IMDb Home Page.
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls068524865/?view=grid

If your poll were to go live, this would improve your chances of the poll being featured on the IMDb Home Page.

I wish you luck with refining this poll. It's been my experience that there are strong and contrary opinions as to what constitutes hard science fiction.

I'm hoping for critique/suggestions for films, or even a discussion on what hard sci-fi is. It's kind of hard to define, but is pretty interesting regardless of what parameters are set.

I put it in the grid form, and I put the movies with pictures first. Thank you for the advice!

Hi TheDoppel,

This Wikipedia article does a reasonable job of defining hard science fiction.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_science_fiction

I personally tend to use the terms SF for hard science fiction and Sci-Fi for less rigorous science fiction.

This search may be helpful. Unfortunately, IMDb conflates superhero films with hard SF.

Most Popular Sci-Fi Feature Films Released 2017-01-01 to 2017-12-31
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=sci_fi&release_date=2017-01-01,2017-12-31&title_type...

From that search, these films are potentially hard SF and not currently on your list:
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Life (I) (2017)
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Kill Switch (2017)
The Space Between Us (I) (2017)
Geostorm (2017)
Stasis (2017)
iBoy (2017)
Bokeh (2017)
Teleios (2017)
The Humanity Bureau (2017)
Marjorie Prime (2017)
Moontrap: Target Earth (2017)

I haven't completely reviewed the search. The films I suggest may not be hard SF.

I was actually thinking of excluding superhero films. I also excluded sci-fi horror and space operas, so the first three are out. I might be bending the term yet anyway, because the article calls for scientific accuracy, but I tend to read that as allegorical accuracy too. I'll be making many revisions anyway.

There are actually some pretty useful on there, and some that look pretty good! Thank you.

Also, IMDb seems to change the rest of my (personal/unrelated) lists to grid form too. Know anything about that?

TheDoppel,

If you change the default setting for one list, all your other list follow suit. This is an annoying undocumented feature.

Hollywood produces very few true hard Science Fiction films. Interstellar probably was the last that qualifies. Kip Thorne (https://www.its.caltech.edu/~kip/index.html/) developed the original concept for the film. Professor Thorne is the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, California Institute of Technology.

It will take a while to refine this poll suggestion so that it will be a viable poll. It will help to define and refine the criteria for the films that you will include as choices.

Well, not all hard sci-fi is necessarily mainstream, but if you look you'll find it. Since Interstellar there's at least been: Ex Machina, The Martian, Snowpiercer, Dawn/War of/for the Planet of the Apes, Arrival, and those are just the (good) ones I can think of off the top of my head. Upstream Color was also supposedly good, but I didn't really like it.

Not long before that (sticking to the 2010's), there was Gravity, Her, Europa Report, Inception, Never Let Me Go, and an entire hard sci-fi series called Black Mirror.

Some of those are also listed on the Wiki page you linked to, which has some good examples on it as well. They also include Passengers, Automata, Elysium, & Robot & Frank from the 2010's.

I'll be researching the films individually to see what the general consensus is for each.

I might email Dr. Thorne for clarification if I don't find more insight in my research.
I also updated the list description to be clearer on what was being considered "hard sci-fi".
Each film will have a source or thought about it's classification in its description too, though I'm not sure people can see it in grid mode.

If anyone was curious, my vote would be for War for the Planet of the Apes. After that, it was The Circle, then Okja, and then Alex Garland's Annihilation. I haven't seen any of them, and my spirits for the Circle have definitely been killed. Okja I'm still looking forward to, and Annihilation was moved to 2018.

TheDoppel,

You did a nice job of writing the introduction for the poll suggestion. I have a few nit picks that I believe will improve your introduction. I've indicated changes with bold underlined text.

Other poll authors may have some additional comments.

- - -

Hard Sci-Fi is science fiction “characterized by an emphasis on scientific accuracy”. The definitions of “hard” and “soft” sci-fi alike are more so approximations however, leaving a lot of room for discussion & debate.

It’s not uncommon for what is considered to be science to be stretched for the sake of narrative. Even Interstellar stretched science for the sake of narrative. What matters is that scientific ideas and concepts are explored in the story.

Which of these hard sci-fi movies are you anticipating the most for 2017?

This poll excludes superhero movies, space-operas, and Sci-Fi horror.

For the record, "moreso" is an actual word. I can see how it might look wrong to some, but I feel stylish when I use it. I will however, still consider re-phrasing it.

I'm going to re-phrase the second paragraph, maybe not exactly the way you suggested, but I see the problem.

Thank you, I'm new at this, so I really appreciate the help.

Is there a limit to one hyperlink per list or something? The only link that works is the "discuss this poll here" from the description. But I put another one at the beginning to link to the Hard Sci-Fi wiki page, and tried using more hyperlinks in the description, but still only one is working.

Yes, you can put more than one hyperlink. (ie True All-Time Movie Box Office Champ?) Links to outside of imdb.com will work on your Get Satisfaction Poll Suggestion and on your Poll, but will not be active on your saved IMDb list. You can test their accuracy by clicking them in the saved introduction prior to saving the list. Usually, outside links will show with small box at the end in upper left hand corner while editing and will show as regular type once saved.

The new Blade Runner. 'Very good poll, by the way, and very informative. I don't recognize your name so I'm assuming you're new around here so welcome. :-)  If this is, in fact, your first poll suggestion, you've got a natural knack: sophisticated execution of a good idea. Bravo.

TheDoppel,

Keep up the good work.

By the way, now that the poll has gone live, you may receive requests to add choices to your poll. If the suggestion meet your criteria you can update the poll and ask for a re-push.

Yes, that should be okay. Only if the poll had to be re-pushed would you need to remove the link.

Is it possible to remove items? It appears that some of these titles have been postponed to 2018, and hence would belong on the 2018 list.

If so, please remove the following: Mute, God Particle, and maybe The Man from Earth: Holocene (released 2017, but only publicly available 2018).

No, deleting options in live polls is rarely possible. It would disrupt the votes for other options.

Even if the selected options become invalid?

I suppose it might, but the poll has become inaccurate, so I was just checking.

It is possible to close a poll that is outdated, although it requires action by IMDb staff. You can post about a request here if you wish:
