Live Poll: Most Intelligent Screenplay Of The Last 20 Years

Did you know the word 'intelligent' came from 'inter lego', which in Latin means "reading between"... and when you do read between the lines provided by these screenplays, you're able to measure the extent of 'intelligence' as a power and sometimes, a complex element of interaction with the matters of the heart, of life and social environment.

The following movies, all released in the last twenty years, were Oscar-nominated for Best Original and Adapted Screenplay and if they don't all deal with "intelligence" or the things of the mind, they have an educational value of their own and they respect OUR enough not to overloook them.

So, which of these Oscar-nominated screenplays of the last 20 years was the most intelligently written?

"and they respect OUR enough not to overloook them" - I guess this should say "OUR intelligence"

Totally, I had changed the last fragment of the sentence and I guess I accidentally erased the "intelligence" word. Thanks!

Deconstructing Harry, then Margin Call, in second place, and Adaptation in third. Second and third might be tied. 'Great poll!

May I suggest one small edit? (Replacing the "and" with an "or" - below in bold.)

Yep, there was no context to the question that could made the use of "and" justifiable, so thanks for pointing it out :)

P.S.: At least one other person and I think that this would make a good home-page poll, so I meant to ask you to edit the title if you want it to be eligible for the home page but I forgot to leave you a note; I'm sorry! If you want it to qualify, though, you could request a re-push. All that would need to be changed is to not capitalize two words in the title, as noted below in bold:

ElM,

I agree with Ruby, this would make a great IMDb Home Page poll. However, the IMDb editors will not select this for the home page unless the title meets their standards: the change that Ruby suggested.

I like the poll idea and the execution, A well written screenplay is the most important item in making a great movie, in my opinion. It is interesting to me that the past twenty years seems to have been largely devoid of great screenplays, relative to other 20 year periods. There were a lot that just missed the cut from the early-1990s (1990-1996), in my opinion including Goodfellas (1990), Reservoir Dogs (1992), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Se7en (1995), Forrest Gump (1994), The Usual Suspects (1995), Toy Story (1995) among others.

I think we can all agree that there's necessarily an element of intelligence in a great screenplay, but in this poll, I was more focusing on either the intellectual aspect or a certain high concept behind the film's idea. Typicall, "Groundhog Day" would have been added if it wasn't for the 20 years criteria.

"The Usual Suspects" would have been included too, but while this film has always been one of my all-time favorite, I could never finish the last 4 or 4 times I tried to watch it, and the more I could see it, the more I realized there were too many loose ends by the ends to make the villain's triumph total, to put it simply, the greatest thing about the film is the A-HAAAA surprise and the editing, but there's something about the big scheme that doesn't make sense.
