Live Poll: Movies Dealing With Trauma

When we think of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), the first word that generally comes to mind is WAR. But not all the memorable cinematic cases of PTSD were related to some hellish memory of a best friend being blown to pieces in Danang or Okinawa... many critically acclaimed movies dealt with non-veteran or military characters suffering from trauma (though some were war-related).

So, whether from the intensity and brilliance of the acting or the realism and poignancy of the writing, or both, which of these movies best tackled the difficult subject of PTSD?

Interesting. What about Reign Over Me (2007)?

I take your word that it deals with a trauma that didn't occur on the battlefield, this is a case of a poll where I tried to collect every movie I knew about the subjects, so omissions are likely to happen and I'll be glad to add any suggestion :)

The protagonist experiences severe and very brutal mental trauma from loosing his family in World Trade Center on 09/11/2001. I'd say it counts.

Wow, good list, Elmo. These movies really do illustrate the experience of trauma and its after-effects well and responsibly. I didn't see 'Don't Look Now,' and I had problems with "The Blind Side,' but, in terms of this poll, I don't really remember it dealing with the issue of trauma, except maybe the mention of his compulsion to protect, and I think 'Jackie,' while a pretty good film, just skimmed over the issue because it only covered one week right after the incident, but the other films really capture it powerfully (and I don't yet know which one I'd choose). I love this poll and think it demonstrates how well films can educate and evoke empathy and compassion.

FYC:
Burning Bed (definitely)
Split ('some of Kevin's identities, although, that would be overshadowed by the portrayal of D.I.D., so particularly the character of Casey)
Extremities (definitely)
The Accused (definitely)
-possibly Silence of the Lambs (Clarice, although the film shows how trauma has influenced her and her career, motivations, etc., she doesn't really exhibit many symptoms of PTSD, except her "waking up to the sound of the screaming of the lambs")
-perhaps Thelma & Louise (for example, Louise reaction to Thelma's assault, Louise not being able to drive through Texas, etc., although it doesn't really show Thelma exhibiting any symptoms, and it doesn't focus on it or hit the nail on the head)

Thanks ruby,

About The Blind Side, I just re-watched the film three weeks ago and well... I guess you're right, it's not much of a trauma than a sad memory that keeps popping out whenever a similar incident happens in real life and even then, it doesn't really affect Big Mike's behavior.

I didn't see Don't Look Know for a while, but wasn't there something related to the red color, whenever it showed up, it reminded Sutherland's character of his girl's drowning, it's all blurry in my memory so I'd love to have someone's insight.

Excellent call with the two Jodie Foster's movies, I hope The Silence of the Lambs won't take all the votes on the basis of its popularity but it did tackle the subject of trauma in a subtle and intelligent way.

I will add all the other "definitely" options :)

I don't think Thelma and Louise works, I saw the film recently. Yes, it was a traumatic decision that triggered Louise's action (literally!) but to say that the whole movie deals with trauma would be a stretch, the trauma played a pivotal part to the plot but didn't drive the rest of the action (literally lol)

Yes, I think you're right about 'Thelma and Louise.' It would be a stretch.

I never saw 'Don't Look Now' but I think it might be on HBO now so I'll try and watch it. Once I saw it on this list, it interested me anyway, so if I have access to it and see it, I'll let you know.

Once again, 'great poll, Elmo.

Now that I finally saw it... I guess Batman Begins belongs to the list.

I'd say it's really good at it, but Batman (1989) and "Gotham" (2014) also did a fairly great job at illustrating Bruce Wayne's trauma.
