Interesting... but the film isn't "about" music, to put it simply, the poll is about movies where music is the dish, not the dressing.

I might be the odd man out on the nomenclature, but I don't consider a vast majority of rap to be music. It's is closer to being poetry but as in serving as a supplement to a hip hop "instrumental" track. The inclusion of 8 Mile, a fine movie it may be, in the list feels a bit jarring. (I have not yet seen Straight Outta Compton, so I don't know the details of to what extent it emphasizes the same audio artistic niche.) That is an old debate, though. Contemporary musical experts seem to accept it as "music" for the most part. Furthermore, it is at least an art form.

I didn't watch all these movies but I was hesitant before including the Rap-related ones, I'm not even sure I should include movies about singing... I'll replace 8 Mile with That Thing You Do

I was thinking the same thing about "singing" versus "music". I'm glad you mentioned it.

If the films should be *about* music, maybe Dirty Dancing and Billy Elliot are questionable. The same goes for both The Piano and The Pianist.

8 Mile is arguably more about music than The Bodyguard (and would probably get more votes).

Music playing a pivotal part is not the same as being about music. But you can draw the line yourself.

Peter,

Now, you're only taking literally what I said to ACT, in the intro I clearly said "music movies". I didn't say "movies about music". I'm not drawing any line, IMDb tags these movies as "music" and that's good enough for me.

However, when I said to ACT: "Music about movies", it was to contrast his suggestion of "American Graffiti" with the other list options. Graffiti wasn't at all about music but music played a significant part to the film's legacy. I'm only saying the film has to be about music in the sense that not only music plays a pivotal part to the plot but it also has to be a strong element of characterization of the main protagonist, that's all. In "The Piano", it's a mean of love communication, in "The Pianist", a mean of survival.

And that said, I'm not 100% sure about "The Pianist" because the main theme is so important it clearly overshadows the music element so I guess I'll remove it.

No problem. I was going by that phrase, “about music”, but I can see that this doesn’t describe all music movies.

ElM.,

My vote: Amadeus (1984)

For your consideration:
Immortal Beloved (1994)
The life and death of the legendary Ludwig van Beethoven. Besides all the work he is known for, the composer once wrote a famous love letter to a nameless beloved, and the movie tries to find out who this beloved was--not easy, as Beethoven has had many women in his life.

I see your list is packed with 35 items. But Zbigniew Preisner And Krzysztof Kieslowski's films could be described as "Movies That Hit the Right Chord" too (Specially Three Colors:Blue)
:D

From your current list my vote goes to :  Amadeus (1984)
