Poll Suggestion: Movies That Tackle Heightism

According to Wikipedia: "A record linkage study of the birth, conscription, mortality, family, and census register data of 1,299,177 Swedish men followed from age 18 to a maximum of age 49 was performed and it was found that a 5-cm (2-inch) increase in height was associated with a 9% decrease in suicide risk."

Indeed, there's an unspoken principle that associates height with good looks, good health, strength and leadership potential, especially for men and it's proven right statistically: surveys uncovered that less than 3% of CEOs were below 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) in height and 90% of CEOs are of above average height. More generally, people whose height isn't in the acceptable norm have often found themselves victim prejudices, tacit discrimination if not "just" bullying.

The following movies aren't all about heightism but they feature one or many characters who have height issues, whose life or social status are undermined by a height issue or inspire condescending or humiliating episodes even it concerns a small portion of the story. So, even movies that indirectly tackle the problem deserve a mention.

Which one is your favorite?

Yes, it's a bit short on replies.

I guess my favorite would be The Station Agent.

Heightism is a serious issue, both ways. I'm 6' 31⁄2" (1,92 m) and that's enough for many people to assume a lot of things about me which are not true (perfect health: it's hard not to get sour looks being both partially disabled and tall).

Also, banging head on everything. At least once a month. :(

Could have been worse.. you could have exactly the same problems and be short lol
I think centimeters (or inches) are men's pounds... it's not much an aesthetic problem than a perception-conditioning one... men are judged and often misjudged because or thanks to their stature and being capable to have eye contact with the majority of people or to tower over them is a social asset rooted in our 'animal' instinct... the big ones appeal to the eye and intimidate more easily... not that's what they look for and that they are guarantees for sucess but lacking these qualities can be a true source of insecurity.

It's not the size of the bump that matters...

My vote: The Station Agent.

I think this poll would be stronger without the first two paragraphs. They remind me of "95% of serial killers have ketchup in their refrigerators" and "100% of people who eat die," lol.

I got Ketchup, Fava Beans and a nice Chianti in the fridge.
Does this mean anything?

ElMo, your response made me laugh so hard -- right when I really needed to laugh so thank you for that! : ) Also, I love your new intro: I've told you this many times before but you're just such a good writer and when you're writing about something important, your words have so much emotional power but without ever relying on cheap sentiments or bow-tie endings. This intro reminded me of that. I've also told you this before but, really, you sometimes elevate polls into an art form. I bow to you, lol.

Ed, you also made me laugh with your response and, again, it was at a moment when I so needed to chill out and laugh so thank you. I really, actually "laughed out loud' when I read your post. And reminding me of Silence of the Lambs is always good for me (that does sound strange even to my ear sometimes - does that mean anything? lol) because I just love that movie and I strive to be more like Clarice. The humor and the Clarice Starling connection came together and I'm in a better mood. So now onward into a pile of work I have waiting for me. I'd say ugh, except that you and ElMo gave me some positive energy that I can use to get started.

Dang, best thought always comes when it's too late!

Why haven't I suggested cult classic Dollman (1991) as an FYC?.. :)

I'm wondering how different Peter Dinklage's career would have been if he got the Oscar lead actor nomination (and possibly win) he was ruthlessly snubbed on with his incredible performance in Station Agent (2003).

Would he have been cast in Game of Thrones in this alternate universe?
