What's the worst crime against cinemanity of which you can accuse the alleged filmmakers of the critically lambasted, box office atrocity, Super Mario Bros. (1993)?

Tsar,

I choose to believe that Super Mario Bros. (1993) doesn't really exist. To believe otherwise is simply too horrible to contemplate.

With that in mind, my vote:
The Emmy winning* directors of the edgy and biting cult television series, Max Headroom, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton were ultimately responsible for the horrible direction of Super Mario Bros..

I've never watched it, but judging by that dialogue, I'm thinking it's no great loss. Sick smiley 3
was stuck in the title role as Mario Mario,
At first I thought this was a typo, but wow, that's actually his name in this film.

It is actually his confirmed canon name in the franchise.

I have a really big soft spot for this movie. It had a lot of questionable creative choices, adapted the games poorly using the least probable aspects and an arguably inappropriate style, but it also had good production design and art direction, edgy and surreal black comedy feel, a few really good scenes and, surprisingly, professional and good acting (considering that actors were quite sure what film would become they still did a very good job). As ironic and weird as it could be, this movie actually got me into Mario games and not vice versa. And it is also far from the worst movies I've ever seen (caution: practically any entry on the list might actually affect your cognitive abilities for some time. You've been warned).

If you'd like to see a really good feature film based on the Super Mario franchise, try Super Mario Brothers: Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach (1986), which, unfortunately, was never released in English, but bootlegs are readily available.

I never could get through the film, I didn't like the settings, I was expecting the same worlds from the Game Boy and the Nintendo games, but it was bleak and depressing like in the Teenage Ninja Turtles movies ... didn't like it.

I don't consider it one of the worst, but just one of these movies that don't really draw you into them.

I think your question is missing a word or two. My suggestion:

What's the worst crime against cinemanity of which you can accuse the alleged filmmakers of the critically lambasted, box office atrocity, Super Mario Bros. (1993)?

Really bad scripts drive me nuts and I also hate seeing such skilled actors not having a chance because of really bad scripts.  I never saw the movie but this actually kind of makes me want to see it just to see how bad a movie can get, which is sometimes hard to get my head around; I suspect that unless I had some really funny people watching it with me, I probably would shut if off very early. 'Very funny and well done poll.

The character and set design were the worst. I could laugh off everything else.

It failed because it's bad. Your annoying prose won't change that.
