Live Poll: Obscure, Surreal and Head-Scratching Movie Quotes

In general, the measure of a good movie quote is how long it sticks in your mind. Some achieve it by being repeated (catchphrases, arc quotes...) and others are delivered only once but are so puzzling that you keep repeating them over and over. They're not necessarily meant to convey obscure or surreal meanings, sometimes they're just so strange and nonsensical that they almost have a ring to it.

This poll is about quotes that don't make sense when you first hear them but sounds so attractive to the ear even if they make you go "huh?". Read each quote, if you know the film, you'll probably agree; if you don't, it's even better.

Which of these head-scratching movie quotes, quick exchanges or dialogues is your favorite?

I am not sure this what you are going for, but you might able to mine some material from AMC's The Funniest Movie Quotes.

I like these two similar exchanges:

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
President Merkin Muffley: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room."

Casablanca (1942)
Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
Croupier: Your winnings, sir. [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
Renault: Oh, thank you very much.

Well now, I'm puzzled... I thought the intro was pretty clear on that level, I don't mean quotes that are funny because they carry a contradiction, if you check my options, they all have one thing in common (or most of them), they don't really make sense when you first hear them and it doesn't generally get better when you repeat them. Of course, they mean something but the initial reaction is generally "huh?" "what?" "can you repeat?"... they're not all funny by the way.

The Strangelove quote is almost what i'm looking for, but the contradiction is obvious, we get the point quickly, for instance the "Who's on first" routine would be a nic addition.

Thanks for your insights!

Head-Scratching is right on point, I am not sure Obscure and Surreal solicit the type quote you are looking for or are the right words to use.  A lot of the quotes are that, but a few seem to make too much sense. i would group all of these together, as making perfect sense, if you watched the movie.  Maybe, the couple of quotes that  too much sense corrupts the overall poll of answers. i don't find any of these head-scratching one bit

"I was a better man with you, as a woman... than I ever was with a woman, as a man. You know what I mean?

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room."

"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"
"Your winnings, sir." [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]

"If God wanted everybody to be the same, he'd have given us all braces on our legs."

My momma always said, “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.”

The "Tootsie" one inspired me the idea, I saw the film so much that yeah, it makes totally sense, but it took me years to figure out what he meant, and when you hear it for the 1st time, it's not as clear as it sounds.

Some suggestions were 'fillers' (like I call them) so I'll probably reconsider.

As Good as It Gets (1997) - Jack Nicholson as Melvin Udall
Melvin Udall : You make me want to be a better man

I think the 'Tootsie' quote is a lot like the' As Good as it Gets' quote. Both are very romantic and profound. Both are like the 'Forrest Gump' quote: “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.” in that you do have to sit there a moment to digest them, but you almost walk saying "I couldn't have put any better." or 'I wish I said that.".

I see your point. Well, first of all, I grew up with the French version of "Tootsie", I can recite that line in French just by heart : "j'ai été mieux comme mec avec toi en étant femme que je n'ai jamais été qu'avec un femme en étant mec". Believe me, it's confusing as hell especially with the fast delivery, after a few years, I realized the depth (you're right about that) and the beauty of this line, but its inclusion on the poll has more to do with the way it sounds. Maybe in English, it's not as confusing in French, I still think it's easier when you read the line than when you listen to it.

A similar one I love from Car Wash when Antonio Fargas' homosexual character Lindy confronts Bill Duke's bigot Abdullah and tells him: "I'm more man than you'll ever be and more woman than you'll ever get!"

Again simple, to the point, profound and a good insult to.I like the Car Wash quote too.

I like the poll idea, I just think a couple of these are not Convoluted, Contradictory and Head-Scratching Movie Quotes. They stand out from the other quotes, while may be contradictory, they really aren't in thier simplicity and genius.

Don't worry, I got the message :)
I agree for some inclusions, I'll have to decide for Tootsie, there'll still be the tomato line anyway...

I agree the tomato line is a better fit. I thought he was making some sense there though, but I guess you can't rationalize a talking and walking tomato in the first place.

Hey ElMo, this is such a good one. I'm deciding between three: the quotes from 'Breathless,' 'Minnie...' and 'Look Who's Talking' are all so great. I really love this one.

May I suggest three very small edits to the (really good) intro? ('Below in bold)

This poll is about quotes that don't make sense when you first hear them but sound so attractive to the ear even if they make you go "huh?" Read each quote – if you know the film, you'll probably agree; if you don't, it's even better.

Oh, and this is hilarious:

A poll vote without a discussion hereis like a soup without a mustache!
(Bravo!)
