Live Poll: Ordinary Objects You'll Never See in the Same Way Again

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls021368151/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/pLDkKtilAkk/

What ordinary object will you never see in quite the same way as you did before seeing a particular film or scene in a film?

*Suggestions, as always, are very welcome. Thank you!*

Feedback requested: If I find other examples like 'It's a Wonderful Life,' do movies like that fit? (If I can't find similar examples, I'm assuming that it would seem strange among scary, odd, or disturbing scenes.)

The bone was added, although it took me forever to decide on which photo to use -- they're both such iconic images.
Now I'm doing the same thing with 'Singin' in the Rain,' debating what picture to use. :)

One minor correction: that is not a butterfly in “Silence of the Lambs”. That is a death head’s moth.

Scissors or shears from “Deal M for Murder”.

But the IMDb just doesn’t have that picture. Or at least a good one of the guy with the scissors sticking out of his back. I think you would remember this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LBoL2vM...
Also add a telephone. But there are other movies had that better - like “Sorry, Wrong Number” https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040823/...
Or a cellphone or phone booth: Phone Booth
I second all of Dan’s picks.

Oh yeah, you're right, that is the death head moth. Since that's quite as commonly known as a butterfly, I'll look for a photo from the film with a butterfly.

The scissors are a great idea! Thanks for the photo. I can upload that to IMDb. :)

I also like the phone booth idea -- and Dan's picks and several others that came after. I'll start adding soon.

Death head moths AREN'T common.  That's literally why they were an extremely important forensic plot point.

Yes, they're certainly not and that's why I'll look for a photo of a butterfy; the omission of the word "not" was a typo.

If I understand your intention right, this poll by Elmo could have interesting additions for you (especially the plastic bag, the snow globe, the baby carriage, the feather, the hat, the coffee mug, the bottle):
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls063977152/?ref_=ls_mv_sm

Also FYC:

A balloon in M (1931)
A door knob in Home Alone (1990)
An ice pick in Basic Instinct (1992) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103772/mediaviewer/rm484720896

Would a glass of milk count? (either in Suspicion, A Clockwork Orange or Inglourious Basterds)

Oh my gosh, a glass of milk is a great idea. 'Not too many things more ordinary that that and it's used to such great effect in all three of your examples.

And thank you for your other suggestions and for reminding me of Elmo's poll. That was very helpful. :)

I can't wait to start adding all of these suggestions!

I uploaded images for the balloon in 'M,' the glass of milk in 'IB' ('couldn't find a workable one from 'Clockwork'), and an ice pick in 'Instinct.' I think some of them should be easily approved and crop well. Thanks, again, alb.

I think you should change The Shining to isolated hotels - the story would still work in a modern hotel in such an isolated area, but it would not work in an old hotel in a urban area.

FYC:
A spinning top - Inception
A white hockey mask - Friday the 13th
A Wilson brand volleyball - Cast Away
A dentist's drill - Marathon Man
A chess board - The Seventh Seal
Reese's Pieces - ET
An '80s era alarm clock - Groundhog Day
A tennis racket - The Apartment
A discarded plastic bag - American Beauty
A drill - Lethal Weapon 2
A banjo - Deliverance
A clear cup of water - Jurassic Park
A red stapler - Office Space
Some small, broken sticks - The Blair Witch Project
A chainsaw - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
A croquet ball - Heathers
A '70s-era police car - The Blues Brothers
Wayfarer sunglasses - Risky Business

Oh wow, yeah, a banjo! :). Thank you so much for all of these. I'm sure I'll add several, if not all.

I can't remember the croquet ball in 'Heathers' and I can't believe it because I loved that movie. I just haven't seen it in a long time. I need to watch it again.

How about “Rosebud” itself from Citizen Kane? Aka: a sled.

As for snow globes, the ones in “The Santa Clause” and “Krumpas” comes into mind before the one in “Citizen Kane”. But in those movies, those are magical and shouldn’t count because they are not ordinary. But then again, you didn’t say anything about an object being magical in your description and you did use two poccessed dolls ( Chucky from “Child’s Play” and Annebelle from “The Conjuring”*). So therefore, magical or evilly processed objects counts.

In concideration for the balloon in “M”, how about the red balloon in the short Oscar winning film, “The Red Balloon” (1956)? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048980/...

* I got something that makes that even scarier. The real Annebelle doll is not an antique china or wooden doll pictured in the movie. It is a large antique Raggedy Anne doll. Knowledge of that little tidbit almost spoils Raggedy Anne for me.

Oh, I just noticed your second message about 'The Red Balloon.' I went to a Catholic school, too (for grade school and high school), but never saw any movie there, yet alone something so brilliant. Your nuns had good taste. I didn't see 'The Red Balloon' until a few years ago but I saw it at exactly the time I needed to see it. :)

Actually they have three of them and technically four. You are seeing the sled without realizing you are seeing the sled. When Kane first looks at the snow globe, which is at a different side than what your picture shows, there are items around the cabin, a snowman, a sign post, and a kid pulling a sled ( that is hidden in your picture). That triggers the memory of the day Charles Foster Kane’s life changed. Now look at the pictures from the scene of Kane’s last day of a happy childhood. What is the kid holding? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/...

Hitchcock made a lot of items disturbing. Ever ride a merry-go-round? You won’t after this from “Strangers on a Train” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=75ACQve... or a lighter from the same movie.

Or the Statue of Liberty after seeing “Saboteur”.

Dan, I'm just not nearly finished yet (ergo the "under construction") and, for example, am going to try to find a better photo for 'Silence of the Lambs' because that photo is not of a butterfly, so I don't want to type up info yet if I don't know if I'll be using it. I've been short on time so I'm working on it a little here and there whenever I get a chance. I would never leave a poll incomplete or inconsistent, yikes. I'm too much of a pathological perfectionist for that, lol. :)

Thanks, Elmo, so much! I had actually already taken some of the objects from the first list when I first made the poll, then someone else left me a link to it and I added a few more when I looked at the list again. I forgot about the second poll, though, and that one's even better for my list because more of the objects are more "ordinary," so I'll be adding some, for certain. This is great. :)

Great poll idea. I would rather suggest the teaspoon, than the cup of tea in 'Get Out', because the spoon was more of the instrument as the cup was. The stiring noise it makes in the cup and the hitting it on the cup.

For your consideration:
  • a dove (or better yet, yodeling), as in Mars Attacks!
  • a wooden latrine, as in Schindler's List
  • a tequila worm (not sure if "ordinary") as in Poltergeist II: The Other Side
  • a woodlouse, as in The Food of the Gods
  • a toilet bowl/commode, as in Look Who's Talking
  • a tiled subway station, as in The Wiz
  • a 1959 GMC Panel (not sure if "ordinary"), as in Bereavement
  • a 1959 Cadillac Ambulance (not sure if "ordinary"), as in Ghostbusters
I'd give a general honorable mention to any object featured in Maximum Overdrive (or in adaptations of certain other novels by Stephen King) or in Final Destination.
