Went to see 1917 on the IMAX screen last night (second watch/first on IMAX). Still pulling for Bong Joon-ho but WOW! Did Sam Mendes stick the landing! I know much of the wow was Roger Deakins but still.

I can see why Mendes could win this one alongside Best Picture.

Todd Philips should win.

What I find dumb is that everybody is overthinking it, A lot of people agree that Joker is the best movie of the year, but no one agrees that Philips his job was amazing. What I mean is that if the movie is so good it is because of the director, the scenario, the actors, etc. So for me, the best director of the year, always directed the best movie of the year.

It's a very straight-forward mimicking of Martin Scorsese's style. And it ain't the best movie of the year. It's solid directing that's not amazing.

But it's fair that you think it's the best film and direction of 2019.
