Hooray for Captain Spaulding" is a song,
originally from the 1928 Marx Brothers Broadway musical Animal Crackers

It later became well known as the theme song for
the Groucho Marx television show You Bet Your Life (1950–1961),

I do not believe that "Three Little Words" meets the criteria for this poll suggestion. I do not believe that the song is a signature song for either Fred Astaire or Red Skelton.

I know what you mean by "(it can be a singer if he's the film's main star)" but it's stated awkwardly. Also, you're asking about songs, but you're referring to the performers in that note. Also, don't they all have to be the singers? I mean, that's what you have now. Or, can it be a song that is not sung by the actor but is definitely their theme song, like Staying Alive for Tony in Saturday Night Fever?
#13 - you need a space between Life and (Monty Python).
FYC:
Non, je ne Regrette rien - Edith Piaf - La Vie en Rose
Lose Yourself - Jiimy - 8 Mile
To Sir, With Love - Mr. Thackery - To Sir, With Love
And, if the performer doesn't have to be the actor, FYC:
Hotel California (Gipsy King's version) - Jesus Quintana - The Big Lebowski
Eye of the Tiger - Rocky Balboa - Rocky III
Born to be Wild - Wyatt and Billy - Easy Rider
The Girl Can't Help It - Jerri Jordan - The Girl Can't Help It
X Gon' Give It to Ya - Deadpool - Deadpool
Lust for Life - Renton - Trainspotting
Unchained Melody - Sam and Molly - Ghost
Old Time Rock and Roll - Joel - Risky Business
The Sound of Silence - Ben Braddock - The Graduate
Tequila - Pee-wee Herman - Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Ride of the Valkyries - Col. Kilgore - Apocalypse Now
In Your Eyes - Lloyd Dobler - Say Anything...

Maybe I can do better in the "stating" department but yeah, the actor has to be the performer of the song. Otherwise, believe me, there would have been dozens more options starting with Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On", "When You Wish Upon a Star", "Shaft", "Rock Around the Clock" etc. basically any iconic movie song.
That said, I'll gladly add "To Sir, With Love" since the performer stars in the film :) and it's one of my favorite movie songs... and I can't believe it wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.

I really like this poll. May I humbly suggest that you replace this choice:

... with one of the following, which crop better:

I consider a signature song to be one indelibly associated with one person. When I hear "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", I instantly think of Judy Garland. Likewise, when I hear "Singin' in the Rain" , I think of Gene Kelly.
A stronger case for a signature song is one that the performer originated and would sing throughout their career. Judy Garland not only originated the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in Wizard of Oz, but performed the song many times since both in concerts and variety shows.

Another Not in a Movie ??
Tell me which of my choices are you in disagreements with, please. Like I said, it's not enough that the song comes from a movie, it must be associated to that movie in particular. But if it's a signature song, and the singer sings it in the film, I won't be too picky. Ideally, the singer should be the picture's star and this is a poll initially dedicated to movies that build songs' legends... but not to the point that we remember the song and not the movie. I'll check that Tony Bennett option.

Therefor Tony Bennett performing: "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" is not eligible for this poll.
The song must be originally sung in a film by the performer / singer and must be considered a signature song.

I'll suggest a teeny edit but obviously disregard my grammar fetish if it's annoying, lol. (The edit is below in bold: a semi-colon, instead of a comma, between "song" and "to be eligible.")
(no 'background' song; to be eligible, the song has to be performed at least once in the film by the actor, actress or the acting singer)

I was thinking of Madonna but there's a similar problem: she doesn't have just one signature song and most of them aren't from movies. "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" might be her signature song from a film but it could be "Into the Groove." 'Good poll.

well...a mighty fine can of worms opened on this one...well done...
i love the fact that so many 'perspectives' come out over answers to this poll...but your explanations have always proved insightful...
but as far as the bette question goes...too many people before bette did the song 'wind beneath my wings'...i will always associate it with other artists, including gary morris, who had a major hit with it prior to bette...
when bette recorded this for the film, it was during her phase when she was doing cover versions of alot of different songs, like another one of her hit singles, 'from a distance' which will always be associated with nanci griffith (also recorded by maura o'connell and others)...
and i do love bette...saw her in the early days...the 'clams on a half shell' show in new york...and she was great...but if there is one film song that is truly 'her' signature song, i believe it would have to be 'the rose'...

also maybe add 'jailhouse rock'...only elvis and elvis alone...a definite signature song...

AFI listed "Wind Beneath the Wings" in the Top 100 most iconic songs and it was the version from "Beaches" which made me believe that maybe it was considered as the 'definite' version. After all, it was Dolly Parton who first sang "I Will Always Love You" yet it's considered as Whitney Houston's signature song thanks to the film's legacy.
That said, if you say "The Rose" again, I'll take your word for it and add it.
As for Elvis, I have added "Love Me Tender" already, do you think "Jailhouse" is his real signature song?

as for bette, i understand your logic, just as i will always associate dolly parton's sweet subtle touching version of 'i will always love you'' over the ear-bleeding whitney houston 'performance'..but yea...as far as whitney goes...that is her signature song regardless...
with bette...it's a tough call...i would still say 'the rose'...most people would probably say 'wind'...(i'm rarely in line with the 'popular' choice anyway...)
to each their own...
love this poll elm...great job...
