Live Poll: Thatta Girl (for Women's History Month) (Recast poll)

Listhttps://www.imdb.com/list/ls027197443/  (Recast poll; originally a character list)
Poll: http://www.imdb.com/poll/kX9IdoN9c4M/

(This was my first suggested poll (and went live in May, 2014). The intro has been changed just a bit and newer characters have been added. It received 1,977 votes.)

Let's celebrate Women's History Month with these independent, smart, and spirited girls: pint-sized feminists and liberated teenagers who are gutsy young forces of nature. These are girls (under the age of eighteen) who defy convention and blaze new trails, and from whom we all could learn a lot. Who is your favorite young female force of nature?

Suggestions welcome.

This image may not crop well. The ice cream cone will likely be cropped out of the image.
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls027197443/mediaviewer/rm1005936128
Image #1 - Moonee in 'The Florida Project'

This image is borderline for cropping. It could be off-center.

Image #3 - Nadine in 'The Edge of Seventeen'

You may consider re-ordering the poll for better cropping.

'Definitely. That's what the "still under construction" refers to, actually (the order is the only thing I haven't worked on - I wouldn't want all the new ones at the beginning either). Thanks Dan.

hey fruit...

nice question...always preferred the tough ones...and i like that you kept alot of the older choices...brought back some classic memories, like tatum o'neal in both 'bad news bears' and 'paper moon'...what a cool kid she was...

when i first read your question, two came to mind, and since you ask for suggestions...ellen page in 'whip it' and natalie portman in 'beautiful girls'...(ironically you have both actresses listed in other roles...)...

ellen page is just such 'another' cool lady and i don't think there is a person alive who didn't fall in love with natalie portman when they saw her in 'beautiful girls' with timothy hutton...such a strong yet tender and confident performance, as she also certainly gave in 'leon: the professional' (which you have listed)...

just thoughts, but i can easily vote for tatum and be sanguine with my choice...

peace to ya' fruit...be well...

Oh yeah, I forgot about 'Whip It' -- 'good idea. I never saw the Portman/Hutton movie but Portman certainly has a knack for those kinds of roles. And I'm glad you like the Tatum options; when this poll first went live a few years ago, I was disappointed that her characters didn't do better but I think a lot of people haven't seen movies before 1990.

Thanks for the suggestions, rock. : )

I added Ellen Page's character from 'Whip It.' I had only two spaces and took one of someone else's suggestions. Thanks so much for the great suggestions.

I enjoyed both your poles & thought most of your choices were very good. I voted for the best available choice in each pole: Hermione in pole 1, & Buffy in pole 2. But your poles would have been better with two more choices. I agree with rocky-o's suggestion of Marty (played by Natalie Portman) in "Beautiful Girls." She is only 13, but she ends up advising the twentysomethings because she's by far the most intelligent & mature character in the movie. And you left out by far the most kickass (& scariest) young force of nature of all: Lyra Belacqua (played by Dakota Blue Richards) in "The Golden Compass." She is a young child, & yet she's a strong leader & by far the scariest character in the film. She is fearless, tough, & commanding. She never backs down or gives up, & takes on all opponents & obstacles (successfully). I would rather face an armored polar bear in a dark alley, than take Lyra on in broad daylight.

I think Lisa Simpson should be in the first line-up (Top 5) if not the first, she's perhaps the trope codifier, the quintessential pint-sized feminist, in fact the most iconic TV feminist :)

Yes, she certainly is. I uploaded two other photos for her with putting her in the first five in mind, actually: I don't think the current one will crop well. I love her.

If you google "Lisa Simpson" and "Feminist", you won't have enough of an hour to cover all the articles written about it :)
The only other equally feminist character I can think of is Clair Huxtable but she certainly doesn't fit your poll, hence the inclusion of Rudy

It's great, isn't it?! :) I don't know if you've ever searched an academic database for articles about her, but there are several scholarly articles too!  I first found that out when, as an undergrad, for my "American Women Since 1960" history class, I wrote a paper asserting that she is the modern version of Rosie the Riveter. After that, a friend of mine made me a t-shiirt with the quote, "Feminism is the radical notion that  women are people" on the back -- and Lisa Simpson on the front. :)

The photos I uploaded to IMDb are still not appearing on IMDb, though, so I don't think she's going to be in the first five (the only ones not on the list in alphabetical order, only because they crop well) because her current image wouldn't crop well. I'm disappointed about that.

I'm so glad you didn't leave poll-making, ElMo!

Oh, hey, speaking of which... here's the article that inspired this poll four years ago: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/how-to-be-a-good-bad-american-girl

I wish I could tell you that earlier before the poll is live.

I also checked on The Simpsons' page, I clicked on "Lisa Simpson" and got a selection of pictures, I guess you took the best one.

I wish I could tell you that not all Lisa Simpson's pictures are tagged with her name and you've got to look for pictures by visiting each page one by one, I tried by starting with the last page and got pictures like this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096697/mediaviewer/rm2712082176

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096697/mediaviewer/rm506729472

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096697/mediaviewer/rm747443200

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096697/mediaviewer/rm3087796992

etc.

In fact, your picture is pretty cool, but I guess you were waiting for the picture you uploaded and didn't have time to have Lisa Simpson in the Top 5, poor thing doesn't deserve to be so low in the list :)

Thanks for the article, I believe that Bart Simpson was the reason why the show immediately caught with the public, Homer Simpson the reason why it stayed popular for many years but Lisa Simpson is the reason why it became culturally significant, she's the voice of reason and the moral conscience of the show. That's why I had to dedicate this poll for her:
