Following up what many consider to be one of the best decades of gangster films ever in the 1990s, the 2000s certainly didn't disappoint. We got great films from directors proven in the genre like Martin Scorsese and Guy Ritchie as well as some who typically operate outside the genre including Ridley Scott and Sam Mendes.

Which of these 2000s Gangster movies will you most likely remember?

Nice picks, thanks Stephen! How is the remake of The Public Enemy (1931)? The original is supposedly excellent so was wondering if the remade film holds up compared to it?

Never saw Public Enemy remake save TV ads for then. Thinking about 1970s Dillinger epic.

Public Enemies (2009) is not a remake of The Public Enemy (1931). I've seen both, and like them both, albeit in very different ways. Public Enemies is based on true events (John Dillinger, Melvin Purvis, etc.) that took place after 1931.

How is 8 Mile a gangster movie?

Was seriously questioning this as one but I wasn't sure whether to include.. less a gangster film in a mob-sense but it does chronicle his life through the slums and he can be deemed a thug-type. Might omit this one though.. I'll see what others think.

It has a thug-gangster feeling but doesn‘t actually belong in the genre.

Maybe Election (2005) is a movie to replace 8 Mile. Not sure if it‘s famous enough but it was nominated for the Golden Palm and is the masterpiece of one of the top Hong Kong directors, Johnnie To. (besides, Tarantino called Election the best movie of 2005... says my Blu Ray cover at least, lol)

It says something that the greatest piece of American gangster fiction was a TV show (The Sopranos, of course). You can‘t tell epic tales like The Godfather and Scarface anymore, it‘s only about day-to-day business. Even gangsters wear suits nowadays, or they sit at home watching baseball like Hyman Roth or become so rich and powerful that they grow into ‚respectable‘ entrepeneurs like Michael Corleone in The Godfather III. Today all the shares of the cake are taken and the American Dream seems not even achievable by blood.

I like the rationale Alb and it's true what you say about the portrayals on TV shows. Still haven't seen 'The Sopranos' but definitely want to tune in soon.

Anyways, I've swapped 8 mile out for Election.. good call! Thank you.

Loved the film till the last ten minutes, basically knowing what happens at the end kills any motivation to watch it again.

The ending was somewhat predictable. I couldn't see how a viable storyline could just drop like a bad habit a temperamental character who is played by an actor of such stature, leaving loose ends or an opening for a sequel.

...on the other hand, part of the ending before than part was rather shocking, and does indeed make the movie hard to re-watch, like all the effort and hardship was in vain.

I agree with what's been said about the ending; it kind of lost a few points in my book but the film remains one of my favorite post-2000 Scorsese films for the characters and energy thats present throughout the story.

Both great, I'd probably opt with CoG between your two; such a layered, gritty story.
