Hi,
I have made:
The Funniest Comedy Film of the '00s
The  Funniest Comedy Film of the '90s
The Funniest Comedy Film of the '80s
The Funniest Comedy Film of the '70s
The Funniest Comedy Film of the '60s
I was planning to make the 2010s list, but I saw your suggestion.
Is it ok with you if I make this suggestion as well, or maybe instead of you?

Let him have it. All of those are live polls in a series.
Share the road!
I would if he asked me.

Paok????
How about it. Be a gent and let "the Little People" have his idea in a series.
Be a pal and let Hoekkie run with this. You have plenty of other polls. What's giving up one poll suggestion when you have 400+ suggestions pending. Pay it forward.
Please. It would be "Good Karma"
Thanks
Ed

Thanks a lot Ed! I agree with you. But I don't see myself as "little" :)
I thought about this very hard and I decided to make the suggestion anyway.
It's not my style to do this.
But I decided to do this because I already made 5 of the same polls and I think you were way to early with your suggestion.
I've made my list like I made all the lists before and without looking at your list.

I've made my list like I made all the lists before and without looking at your list.

I think this little situation confirms an idea I've had for a long time which is to establish a few rules when it comes to poll suggestions. "Rules" might be too strong a word, maybe "regulations" is better.

Think of it, we all love to suggest polls but we don't do it the same way.

Some of us have polls series, some make one or two polls a week and then work on improving them, some are real stakhavonites (making one after another) etc. Same goes with bumping or updating, there are differences of cadences. I used to be so active that i'll never forget 10 years ago when I had just started and one of the veterans  called me a poll wh*re!

The result is that at time "t" some users get more visibility than others, and by the way, I'm absolutely not talking about my personal situation because I've learned from experience that old polls can do without bumping and I don't mind 'disappearing' for a few days, I know how to come back lol...

But maybe we should try to find a way to make our methods converge somehow, how about a limit in poll suggestions for each week, not to get the whole thing flooded by the same names. Because there's another reality : our eagerness to suggest polls make us also step in others' territories. Again, a big word but that's because we don't differ in working methods only but in "achieved products".

Indeed, one of the most charming aspects of our community is that every poll board member has his or her trademarks: DC makes timely and event-related polls, Kyle and Hoekke have become specialists of decade-related polls, I love quotes polls and try to get creative even if it means spending one hour on one idea but I'm an amateur compared to Ed Jones and his twisted intros... and ruby (like Jen used to be) love to approach subjects that touch her personally.

So we all cover different areas, which is good, but when we get too carried away by our desire to have polls picked, we start "betraying" our kind of polls, one day I wanted to suggest some polls until realizing that was DC's thing and it didn't feel right to imitate his style even if it could mean the homepage, and every once in a while I try to make what I call a random poll but I never feel hot about it, I believe there should be some sort of motivation behind.

Establishing rules would prevent someone to make polls just for the sake of it, for instance, I can right now pick 10 actors from the Golden Age and suggest the following polls:

Favorite Clark Gable Movie
Favorite James Cagney Movie
Favorite Spencer Tracy Movie
Favorite Katharine Hepburn Movie
etc. etc.

then I have the same standard question:
"what is your favorite .... movie?" or "these are the top 35 rated movies starring ...., which one is your favorite?"

And then I suggest the 10 in a row, OK, fine, good. But what satisfaction would I get? Sure I covered these actors' areas and if anyone makes similar polls, I'll call first... but what was so interesting and (yes) "fun" in making these polls in the first place?

i'd rather make one poll and ask "who's your favorite Golden Age actor?" or spice it up a little : "what's your favorite Golden Age actor's Oscar-winning performance?" or "Swan song?" etc. Making a poll must be fun, not feel like work.

So I think there should be some regulations we make up together, limiting the number of suggestions, of bumps, and giving the priority to a fellow board member if he made the suggestion before or even if he made similar poll suggestions that reflect a certain patter.

In that case, I think Paok should gracefully let Hoekkie finish his series. It's just as if I made in a row l"Movies at 25/ 50 / 75 in 2020", I still know, deep inside, that it's DC's trademark even if I suggest that before him... so I don't think it would be right to appropriate his ideas, even if it means the homepage.

Let's act like the gentlemen we are.

Yes, well said! I agree with you and it's exatly the way I look at it to.
I think making the polls has to be about quality (and fun) and not about quantity.
Just like you said. And this is a poll I really enjoy making.

I agree with some of the things you wrote, but when you said 'we should prevent someone to make polls just for the sake of it' and 'what satisfaction would I get? Sure I covered these actors' areas and if anyone makes similar polls, I'll call first... but what was so interesting and (yes) "fun" in making these polls in the first place?' if you are referring to me (because I make many suggestions) I have fun with every poll that I make even with some which I know they will never go live. Either way Hoekkie's suggestion will probably be the chosen one by IMDb editors either I erase my list either I don't.

First of all, I'm sorry if I said something that displeased you, this is why it's gonna be my last intervention on the subject.

I was referring to something that doesn't just concern you but anyone taken by the poll fever... and that also meant me at some points of my life. So believe me, I'm not judging you or anyone because I'm in no position to judge.

What I'm saying though is that our polls' methods (frequency and content-wise) sometimes can interfere with one another, even if it's not intended. It's like having your roommate cleaning the place once a week when you can't wait more than two days, there's got to be some arrangements made for the sake of harmony.

And I'm sure you have fun making your polls but you know, "fun" is a two-way road, it has to be enjoyed by both the maker and the receiver... sometimes, I have fun making a poll and then it all falls flat and I give up.

Anyway, have a good day.

Paok, maybe it's better to give in. The other pollboard users/members right. I know it's a contest for the best Ideas, but you must admit that the idea of making this poll series was born of the mind of Hoekkie. It would be more gentleman like to give in. It's a little like Sony and Disney, when you look at the super hero movies from Marvel, specially the next Spidey movie. Sony had the guts to give in. Koh Tao, Sony! ;D

Anyway have a good day.

I never said that I have 'steal' the idea of this poll from Hoekkie, I said that the IMDb editors will probably choose his poll over mine and that's fine by me I won't complain, it's their decision to make. It just happened that these kind of suggestions had a previous owner.  7 months ago I had also make 6 similar suggestions:

If yes my favorites are 1-La La Land
                                    2-Birdman
                                    3-Green Book

None of them made me laugh, but they are the best according to me  I never laughed while watching a movie because I don't watch pure comedy movie.

Why not do another one about dramatic comedy or black comedy?

For that one, I agree with Paok, let's just stick to movies whose main goal is to provide belly laughs, good old dumb idiotic movies that make you laugh because it's funny and because you're laughing at stupid jokes. By the way, I think this term comedy/drama is a bit hackneyed now, basically any drama that feature lighthearted bits is eligible...

I guess it's not that easy, comedy and drama should work equally, for example when I watch most of the brothers Coen movies I have the feeling of being watching a real dramatic comedy

But they have made plain goofy comedies... Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, Ladykillers, O' Brother and some parts of Buster Scruggs. Comedy Drama is a category by itself... even The Wolf of Wall Street would have to be added... but it is not a comedy.

In G the audience even invented a new word for: Drama + Komödie = Dramödie,
literally translated it would be called dramedy.

The Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona are a kind of dramatic comedies in disguise, if we talk about The Wolf of Wall Street I think it's an extravagant comedy, but really the goal of the film is not to make comedy, something like The Big Short that shows extravagant situations that surround important issues through funny touches to laugh with things that otherwise should have a different effect on us because somehow the actions of the characters in these movies are real and affected our lives.

Like any good drama has a few comedic relief moments, any good comedy has dramatic moments as well, it's a matter of balance... apart from spoof movies or parodies. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is full of hilarious moments and "Back to the Future" can get emotional.

Therefore the list 6 includes comedy-drama such as Easy A, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Disaster Artist, Hunt For the Wilderpoeple and Moon Rise Kingdom. So I don't understand why others like La La Land, Green Book, and Birdman are not eligible.

The Disaster Artist has a much more comic tone than Birdman and Birdman has a more dramatic tone than The Disaster Artist, The Disaster Artist is laughable and Birdman is less accessible, about Green Book I think it was Peter Farrelly himself who considered it a drama despite that in the golden globes they have been nominated as a comedy.

After all this I can only say that the line between comedy and dramatic comedy is very fragile and can be confused above all with comedies that are taken very seriously.
