Live Poll: The Canes' Festival

"There's the cane from 'Citizen Kane'. Wait a minute, there was no cane in 'Citizen Kane'!

You're right, Lisa Simpson, but there was a cane in many other movies and TV shows, and although we can't really call them 'cane' in the orthodox meaning of the word, let's accept any walking stick (of magical or deadly power) as a technical cane. So, let's start the Canes' Festival (yeah, it was no typo) and ask the question:

Which of these memorable TV/movie characters with a cane is your favorite?

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls020242830/

http://www.imdb.com/poll/8xsJoBhUF3s/

(Need more TV-related options, thanks)

Wasn't John Steed's "swordstick" coming from an umbrella? Didn't he have a cane anyway? I wish I could add him, if I have only one TV character, I guess I'll "stick" to movie characters.

I love this idea! And, of course, the Lisa Simpson angle, lol. My vote would go to House.

I'll try to brainstorm about other characters, especially from TV.

Thanks Ruby, I'm brainstorming too :) Btw, do you know if Perry Mason had a cane? And Huggy Bear?

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I definitely don't know about Huggy Bear but I don't remember ever seeing Perry Mason with a cane. My mom and I used to watch re-runs of Perry Mason all the time and I'm pretty sure he didn't have one.

If I recall correctly, Raymond Burr did not ever use a cane during the television series, Perry Mason. However, he did eventually use a cane during the later Perry Mason movies.

Bratters,

I knew that Nog from ST:DS9 used a cane towards the end of the series. I'm happy that you found an image of him with a cane. I failed to do so.

Dan,
Maybe you could help with the others? Since I no longer have an IMDb account I can't add better pictures. I made a comment about the dearth of good images on IMDb on the 'Cinematic Cities' suggestion. I'm just surprised about how some entries on IMDb are just abysmal when it comes to images.

I'm really struggling with this poll, it's impossible to find a good pic with Judge Doom and his cane, I'll add all the suggestions (thanks to everyone by the way) but for Huggy Bear, I'm trying to find one with Antonio Fargas, better have the original than the replica :)

Elmo, I looked all over Google for pictures of him as Huggy Bear with a cane and no luck, I did find this picture but it isn't from the show (it looks like it was done for some kind of 'fan convention' maybe?).

Also what about 'Grandpa' from 'The Simpsons'?

I couldn't find one picture (out of 1,382) here of him with his cane but here is one I found on Google:

Also, here is a still from that episode:

He doesn't always sport a cane, in fact, I can't recall a particular scene where you see him with a cane. Right now, I'm trying to find one with Cinderella's Lady Tremaine. She didn't have a cane all the time but it did play a role in the film's climax.

PS: I love the picture! the funny thing is that they were actually wrong, there was a cane in "Citizen Kane", in the dance number scene ("there is a man...")

Tanks Jen. There's no need for Depp's Wonka since there is the original. I never 'duplicate' characters in polls but I'll mention him in the Wilder option.

Thanks a lot for Judge Doom (I added the others, except for Jafar who was already there)
I hesitated a lot for Wonka, if there's enough room for 1 last addition, I might think of including him anyway :)

"Discussing the list?" is better written as "Want to discuss this list?" based on the sentence that follows.

Isn't John Steed's an umbrella, not a cane?

Here are some better shots of Scrooge McDuck's cane:
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0027722/mediaviewer/rm676521216
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0027722/mediaviewer/rm3218745856

Here's a shot of Huggy Bar that actually shows his cane:
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0009821/mediaviewer/rm4021259264

The shot you have for Hershal isn't his cane - it's a bar with a loop on the end of it foputting around animals (and zombies) necks to control him. This is his real cane:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520211/mediaviewer/rm1245360640

And the shot you picked for Morgan is just showing a stick he was sharpening, not his actual cane (se the details on this photo): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520211/mediaviewer/rm1135799552

Why is it that after reading your comments, the confidence I have over my English writing suddenly drops. Seriously, I'm even questioning the usefulness of writing reviews if I can't even write properly.

Yes this "discussing the list" sounded awful, what was I thinking?

As for the Walking Dead pics, I didn't want a "black and white" one but a still frame from the show, as for Hershel's cane, I tried to find one where he was right in the middle or visible enough (same reason why I picked the other Huggy Bear's pic) but it doesn't seem like Hershel has his cane everytime.

I'll see what I can do.

Hershel is barely visible in the cane picture, we'll pretend it's his cane in that picture, the voters will 'get the point', as for John Steed, I read he had many 'cane-weapons' and sword-sticks (besides the umbrellas) so ...

Elmo, Don't let her criticism's get you down. I personally think your suggestions are 'top drawer'.

Also, your John Steed comment reminded me of of a boyfriend my mother had when I was in high school, he had a cane that when taken apart & reassembled turned into a pool cue. He ended up giving it to me. It was pretty cool. It looked kind of like this (although the carving was more ornate):

Hey Brat, thanks for your kind words. I don't think 'malice' prevails in the poll board, my "feeling down" about English writing was incidental to Jen's post but that doesn't invalidate her remarks for all that. I should take it easy and accept that I'll never be as fluent as someone whose mother tongue is English. C'est la vie...

Elmo, you are welcome but I think her reply was directed at my response not yours. I just get irritated at her occasionally. She is usually one of the first to give suggestions to others (and gets 'stroppy' when people don't use them) but is loathe to take suggestions from others. I'll just refrain from commenting about her here.

Well I guess we spend so much time on this board it is likely to be a source of irritation sometimes, I'm also bothered by a thing or two but I try not to pay attention or to keep my reactions to them as "occasional" as possible... on the basis that we're all human and I might have my share of bad habits.

Elmo, the list looks great! I'm so sorry that I didn't contribute earlier. I told you that I'd brainstorm but, when that didn't work, I asked my brother, whose knowledge of films is amazing. He thought of a few and I wrote them down, then did a few Google searches, and thought of two myself. I didn't, however, come on to post my suggestions until now and the suggestions I have  either have already been suggested or are much less well-known that most of the characters on your list or have better images than a couple of mine. 'So sorry, but am so glad that you were able to get such great images and that you found an answer about Huggy Bear, lol. 'Well done, Sir ElM.

The cropping for the first five images now looks fine.

You have a legacy of great polls. I'm simply trying my best to improve your chance of this poll appearing on the IMDb Home Page when it goes live.

Elm,

Since you have this as your final choice, I believe you consider this poll ready:

Another character, which includes young King David, Jesus or the Three Angels, Hershel Greene, Hans Moleman or some other cane this list didn't cover.
