In 1972, George Cukor hosted a party in honor of fellow movie director Luis Buñuel. Other colleagues were invited, and when most of them sat down for a photo, a highly illustrious group of filmmakers was captured.

Which of them is your favorite?

*Serge Silberman, a producer, and Jean-Claude Carrière, a writer who only directed three short movies, are not included among the options.

Alb,

Great picture. It would have been fun to be a fly on the wall to hear the conversation at George Cukor party.

My vote: Alfred Hitchcock

I second Jessica's statement: Welcome back to poll making.

Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back, to that same old place that you laughed about
Well the names have all changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
(Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(Back here where we need ya)
Yeah we tease him a lot 'cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

We always could spot a friend, welcome back
And I smile when I think how you must have been
And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again
And what could ever lead ya
(What could ever lead ya)
Back here where we need ya

If I remember correctly, it was on this occasion that Hitchcock told Buñuel he considered him to be the only filmmaker of equal caliber. To the latter's surprise, Hitchcock recounted scenes from Buñuel's movies with perfect precision. It shows in their movies that they shared themes and obsessions.

When talking about equals to Hitchcock, I think his contemporary rival Henri-Georges Clouzot (aka The French Hitchcock) is a good contender too.

In my personal belief about Diabolique (1955) he even managed to surpass Hitch a little bit :/

It's strange that Truffaut and the other French younglings hated Clouzot even though they were the ones to elevated Hitchcock.

Correction, it seems Truffaut was an exception but most other Nouvelle Vague directors were not fond of Clouzot.

I haven't seen any of Buñuel's movies, but as a result of a discussion I had on a Facebook group earlier today I saw  Un Chien Andalou (1929) a few hours ago and now I can't wait to see "all" of his other surrealistic movies. :)

Though I can say one thing, I have never been disappointed yet by a William Wyler movie

If you want you could probably do a Movie Brats aka 'New’ Hollywood version. There is likely a version out there with a couple more of the group.

Thanks, Its all yours. I have a lot of other balls in the air right now. I was really taken with your group photo and the heavyweights on it. It made me think of this group and I knew that they had both socialized, as well as, used each other for sounding boards. I know there are more than few photos of the group and others out there. But, it would seem viable even with just these seven directors. I wonder who else was at the party???

Good Luck. It shouldn't affect it use, but I have one interesting speculative observation about the Hollywood Reporter EXCLUSIVE PHOTO. If you compare the two above photos, they oddly appear to be the almost duplicates with a key difference. Both, show the same identical poses, the same expressions, the same foreground objects and the same people in the background. I would speculate THR photo-shopped other party attendees, directors Ron Howard and Robert Zemeckis into the color picture, while sliding Francis Ford Coppola to the right to get their exclusive.
