Live Poll: The Most Wonderful Hollywood Actress Aged 55+

  • (Edited)
Intro:

A look in modern media. There is a common sense of delusion about
everybody has to be young. Commercials mostly show 25 year old anorexia
models without facial wrinkles, completely clean and they look like a perfect designed cyborg, made of plastic.

When you look at Sir Sean Connery or Sean Bean you might realize that some people don't have to follow that delusion, because of their rich and lovely personality. They mature like an extraordinary good vine, e.g. from Petrus vineyards. The older they get, the better they look, the more attractive they are. This also counts for many actresses. Now look at the actresses 55+ of age. Which of these actresses below did most grow to you heart or simply which of them do you most admire? (Please avoid to let their sense of taste for clothing or makeup at events influence your decision.) Tell me about her.

Rules:

She has to be or have been popular.
She should be 55+ (I don't count on a few weeks difference, but not more than 3 month)
She should still live, the day it really becomes a poll. (in case of accidents, etc.)
She should also be a movie actress

List:

I had no idea Sandra Bullock was over 55 - she looks great!  So does Elvira.

I suggest Julia Duffy, of Newhart/Designing Women.  https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0240564/
Not only has she aged well, she is a very talented and funny actress.

Thank you, NIA. :D
Sandra Bullock is still 54 years old. She has her next birthday at July, 26. That's just a few weeks, but I let it count up to 3 month. It might take a little time till the List may become a poll, but in a little more than a month, Sandra is 55 y.o. I love our German lady, even met her at the premiere of "The Proposal" for wich she came to Germany. She's really a nice and kind person. So I wanted her to be on the list. ;)
If there are a few ladys on the list, which turn 55+ only within three month, the world will still turn. ;D And three month later, the title surely fits for all of them.

Thank you Ed. Michelle Yeoh still is on the list. For the other two I want to give NIA a chance to answere. After she did, I will decide which of the ladys I'll put to the list. Pam Grier sure is a wonderful pick and might have best chances to get on the list.

Please note: Untill the list turns to be a poll, the list is flexible. So if better suggestions appear, I will turn down other options. Which they are I will decide case by case. Black, Asien and Mexican outstanding 55+ ladies have priority in a matter of diversity and to not make the list too white. Thank you, guys.

Was gonna suggest Tia Carrere but she's just 52!  I suppose that's not close enough...
Here's some to pick from:
Dolly Parton
Jamie Lee Curtis
Oprah Winfrey
Whoopi Goldberg (unless they're already on the list)

Dolly Parton is more a singer than an actress. I think there are ladies that deserve more to stand between these excellent actresses. Sure Dolly Parton is honorable and at the fitting age, but no. I wonder I forgot Jamie Lee Curtis. Excellent pick, she's on the list. Oprah too. Whoopi Goldberg was on the list before. Thank you. :D

I've put Pam Grier to the list.
If you want, you can still suggest ladies that fit. It might be, that I forgot very honorable women that are not white. I'm flexible about it. For more diversity, I'm ready to put other women on the list.

Please remember: There are only 35 options maximum and there are already very strong candidates on the list. So I'm not willing to change strong women like Julianne Moore, Anette Bening, Michelle Yeoh or Angela Basset for weaker candidates. Thank you both anyway, that was great help, buddies.

Please don't be angry, if your suggestion is not listed - it will appear in the next suggestion. I would still be happy with some more diverse suggestions, but you can still suggest the actress you want to be on the lists. :D So please further suggest for this list:

Your statement about commercials privileging only 25 or younger anorexic models is rather debatable if you allow me to bring a disagreeing voice (though I see your point), for instance, we live in a social-network driven era, it's not about commercials but about Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and the women who choose to expose the physical value of their apparences rather than the content of their characters are rarely doing this by showing how "skinny" they are... besides, commercials tend to explore (or exploit) the popularity of female stars and you can see them all selling out for some big perfume brand with an arthouse-style clip... what you're referring to was rather common in the 90s with figures such as Claudia Schiffer, Elle McPherson or Naomi Campbell... but I think  it's a misconception that thin is the new sexy, overweight might be not but even then, there is a margin for appreciation.

Thank you for the critical voice. I would agree, if the highly acclaimed designers of dresses also would bring out collections for more bigger women. But women from the size of Melissa McCarthy in normal life and without McCarthy's cash still have problems to find good looking clothing. At most highly acclaimed fashion stores they still can't. If you are skinny, you have no problem anyway. You'd find clothing in any store everywhere in the world. The same for men. It's not easy to find clothing for men which are big. You just might look at the Harry Potter movies. All dumb characters are big sized. There is still a prejudice for people that are big sized. And the shows of Heidi Klum ("Germany's Next Topmodel") won't make it better. The skinny dogma still lasts. When I look a commercial, people are mostly young and sure not 1 gramm fat too much. If a tiny little belly is seen, they won't appear in commercials, unless they're the dumb negativ guy or girl to show how to not do something. After the negative guy/girl showed whats dumb, the clean, shaven, waxed and skinny people show how the problem is to be solved with [put in Trademark here].

Hey man, you didn't get my point, I 100% agree with what you said about "big sized" persons, though I would say that the main issue for men is heightism (being shorter than 5'9 is quite a physical handicap today regardless of the size), I was simply reacting to your intro because I didn't quite see the connection with the age. Ageism is an issue for that matter but many of these veteran actresses have their share of responsibility for the physical standards magazines are still selling today...

Agree. It was more about the generally being flawless in any kind. As I know many old people and I know people over decades, I also know that this flaws rise more and more the people get older. People get wrinkles, they grow horizontally, things like that. Some say main life is over with 60. Others say at 66 the life just beginns. ;D The thing with the bigger sized people is just a little part of it. I will change the intro, maybe it's more understandable, then. More to the point, perhaps.

When I think of "getting old," I think 70 or 75+. Also, are you going to do a list for men?

Anyway, may I suggest a few edits? ('below in bold) They're grammatical except that I would definitely cut "This also counts for many actresses" for a few reasons. I'd also cut "below" from the last sentence?

Growing old is a pain for many people; some even say the main part of life is over at 60. But some people don't count on their age; they don't despair and enjoy their life better than before. When you look at people such as Sir Sean Connery or Sean Bean, you might realize that growing old can be nice when you have a rich and lovely personality. Now look at these actresses 55+ of age. Which of them is your favorite?

Thanks. : )

No, I didn't find any women of color except Winfrey and a few that were already on your list. Rosie Perez almost makes it: she'll be 55 in a few months.

One of the things about certain lists is that it can be difficult to reach diversity simply because of the nature of the changing movie industry. Women, people of color, and  minorities, such as openly LGBTQ persons, can be difficult to find for some lists because they are just starting to break into the "old (straight, white) boys' club." I think that's happening here because while most of the actors in their 50's belong to Generation X, most of this group of actors are Baby Boomers and when they were getting their start, the movie industry utilized the talents of a more narrow group. For instance, Peter Dinklage finds a good deal of work these days - perhaps not enough but, for most of the Twentieth Century, he probably would have been much more marginalized despite his impressive skill.

That's cool that you're making a part two. I hope my suggestions help with that list. : )

It's nice to come back from work and find such fun. :)
Thank you, specially for suggesting and having interest in this subject.

Dibyayan:
It's ok for me, when you do some non-Hollywood-poll of the same subject.
The idea then would be to assemble all actresses that never worked in
(for) Hollywood. Or just in minor roles or just in one or two roles, but have
a big filmography. That's just what I think about. Feel free to use it. I would
be honored to vote your poll. :D Perhaps I would have a suggestion.
