The Tar Heel State is the official nickname of North Carolina. The origin of this nickname isn't clear. Most historians agree that the nickname stems from North Carolina's long history as a producer of naval stores: tar, pitch, rosin and turpentine from the state's extensive pine forests (source: North Carolina became the 12th state of the United States of America in 1789.
