Remember that these are women who are first and foremost known as singers before they acted in a movie. It also helped if they sang in nightclubs and caberets.
The list is at http://www.imdb.com/list/ls069875320/...

To Peter who merged the topics together. It is indeed the same topic. I just kept on getting the red bar of death saying that I didn't have access to the page that made me think I was ether banned from this site or that my poll suggestion wasn't posted. That you Peter.

not fair...not fair...not fair...

the way the question is worded..."which one has the most respect"...that throws a curve in choosing, rather than simply 'who is your favorite' (which is what most people will pick anyway)...

but since i actually pay attention to the question, when it comes to r-e-s-p-e-c-t, who else would you think of but aretha...

but then there's tina turner in 'thunderdome'...i love tina....and bette midler, who in her early days, kicked out a storm with the best of them...

but looking over the list, when i think of 'respect', i would say the greatest 'respect' would have to go to rosemary clooney, simply because she was considered a premier jazz vocalist, along with being a wonderful actress...

i love polls that make you think...excellent excellent question...

Honestly, I didn't think of the whole "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" and Aretha Franklin's song when I thought up of this list. In fact, Aretha was the last person I thought of. Tina was of the first. It is just that Tina got lost when I had first tried to order this list in some sort of historical perspective at the beginning at first (and even that got messed up to which I will have to fix latter). It is only after that I had listed Rihanna that I realized "Oh My God! I forgotten to list Tina!" By then I had three more artisst to add on too. She may be near the last on the list, but mentally, she was indeed one of the first thought of.

The whole "respect" thing in the title came about from two other reasons. 1) I just got tired of writing "Favorite" and I wanted to see something new and different. You are still right in what you said about how people will vote but at least I had suggested something different from what I usually suggest.
2) a large part of this is because of Teriek Williams defending Madonna so much on his "Poll Suggestion: The Most Controversial Music Video of All Time". While there is no questioning Madonna's success, I think she hasn't earned the respect that that many artists on the list have earned. I think in head to head faceoffs, I think she would lose against Streisand, Tina, Ross, Huston, Cher, Midler, Clooney and Mermen. IMHO, the only way she stood a fighting chance of winning is as if they were all in the same poll fighting in out and splitting the opposing votes. So why litter the IMDb with a ton of two entry face offs when you can have one big one.?
What is worst, at one time I was also consider throwing in the crooners too like Crosby, Sinatra, Martian, Elvis, Micheal Jackson, Ice T, and Ice Cube (rappers as Crooners ?!?), and Madonna would have been totally deep fried cooked!
My agony and problem is that I can't add Judy Garland onto this list unless it is on the slimmest techeniccallities. Even though she and her sisters (as The Gumm Sisters) sang and performed acts in vaudeville at her father's cinema between shows, and she did perform as a solo artist too, she didn't record her first song/record until after Louis B. Meyer signed her with MGM at the age of 13. Almost all of her first recordings were songs from the movies she was in. Damn! She would have been a great addition to the list!

can't forget tina!!!!...love that!!!...

and yea...judy would have been great...but i see your point...

and i do agree one hundred percent that when you think of the word chanteuse, it is edith piaf who comes to mind (as peter mentioned), but i never realized she was in films...maybe some bit pieces here and there singing...ya' learn something new everyday...

the men poll would be kinda cool too...but that's for another day...

interesting what made you decide to make this poll...and i agree...many of these ladies would clearly outshine...

but as for the issue with the question, perhaps it could read...

...Which Chanteuse Who Acted In Films Do You Respect The Most?...

then it's like saying 'favorite' without having to say 'favorite'...just a thought...

keep up the great thoughts yourself...

Chanteuse makes me think of Edith Piaf. She was in some films.

And thank you for naming a French artist. I wanted more international flavor to the artists listed here and you gave it to me. Thank you.

Great suggestion! I don't know about respect, but my favorite is Whitney Houston :)

I find the question in the title slightly unanswerable.  Like rocky-o pointed out, I could tell you who I think deserves the most respect, but who actually has it is an empirical question that we don't have a way of answering (unless we undertake a research study, which would be fun!).  Perhaps you could provide voters with a basis, such as the awards they've won or the number of records they've sold?

Also, I don't know if that's gonna be the case once it's published, but your introductory texts are all cut in half followed by an unclickable ellipsis, so maybe that means you'll have to limit them to approximately five and a half lines.

Oh and I'd uncapitalize the "The" and the "In" in the title, add a question mark to the end, and fix the description in order to increase the chances of getting picked.

DG,

The title should be:

Which Chanteuse Who Acted in Films Has the Most Respect?

I didn't include the punctuation marks because I had thought that the IMDb didn't want them the titles to the polls. I'll add the question mark but I will leave out the commas which would have been after "Chanteuse" and "Films" in proper punctuation.

Do honky-tonks count as night clubs?
Reba McEntire . She was in "Tremors", "One Night At McCool's", "North", the voice of Betsy the cow in "Charlotte's Web" , a spectator in "Maverick", and even though I'm not counting tv as qualifiers, her two tv series.
And even though she has more tv work than movies, she does have "Harlem Nights" and "Beauty Shop" to her credit, Della Reese.
Then there is Pearl Bailey
