(Part 1 of live poll here: http://www.imdb.com/poll/oOOxX-kXtAw/?ref_=po_ho )

In the era of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kate McKinnon, Wanda Sykes, and countless others, it's hard to believe that anyone would say that. There was a time, however, when many did: perhaps most famously, Jerry Lewis. The truth, though, is that there have always been funny women, from Lucille Ball to Carol Burnett and many others. To extend the celebration of Women's History past March, when it's officially observed, which of these women most disproves the assertion that "women aren't funny?"

Truthfully, Gracie Allen was probably the funniest woman comedian that ever lived. She was a genius and could adlib entire routines.

She was extraordinarily talented, indeed. (Oh, she's in the part one poll, if you didn't already see her.)

I think it's a generational thing, I heard many interviews of famous comic-books cartoonists like Herge, the creator of Tintin and Goscinny, the creator of Lucky Luke and Asterix (I'm a comic-book buff) and they were asked the same question: "why don't you have many female characters?" Goscinny said that he loved to paint humanity in its most ridicule traits, to inspire laughs and sympathy, he didn't believe that women couldn't be funny but he had too much respect for women to make them look ridiculous, he didn't want to take the chances. Not that he never used female characters for laughs but he rarely laugh at them but with them, maybe it's an extreme case of gallantry, Herge didn't like to draw female characters because he thought he was going to make them look like caricatures. Of course things changed with the passing of time and they were many pioneers like Claire Brétécher (I'm not sure she's famous outside the French-speaking world).

It's not that men used to think that women couldn't be funny but I think these guys didn't like women who were trying to be funny because in their idealization of women, the line between being fun and self-derision was very thin and they couldn't be attracted by women who mocked themselves, besides men used to be funny to attract women, so "being funny" is their thing, their territory and they didn't want women to occupy it :)

Some Golden Age actresses were known for having quite a sense of humor and being pretty comfortable with comedy: Carole Lombard - Rosalind Russell - Ginger Rogers (in a way, one could say Margaret Dumont was funny even if she was being Groucho Marx' "straight man")

And I'm a huge What's My Line follower on Youtube and one of the wittiest, warmest and funniest celebrities I've ever seen was certainly the delightful Arlene Francis

Does women must have been a comedian mean having a stand-up act or toured as stand-up comedian? Does working on a variety or skit show qualify? Sarah Jessica Parker  and Diane Keaton seems out of place on this list, I am unclear on whether either has toured or worked as a stand-up comedian.

Otherwise, I like both lists very much, but I would suggestion a third list with international stars or injecting more non-Americans into this one, like Rebel Wilson. I do see a few listed though, but would think there are more out there that had a series or movie roles too. 13 Essential Female Stand-up Specials to Watch Right Now

I was in the process of deciding if I should model this after the first poll, in which Parker or Keaton would not fit, or expand the inclusion criteria a bit to allow for them and a few others. I'm leaning in the direction of keeping it like the first (history of stand-up, improv, or skit work requited) and perhaps doing another one for actors such as Keaton and Emma Stone who are so talented with comedic work.

Oh, I just realized I have the "under construction" note up and that I didn't actually yet list such inclusion criteria.I still have to decide, though.

Oh, thanks for the link. I hadn't heard of a few so I might add those, especially if I remove more than three of the current options.

Hi,
Was at one of your other polls and you are missing an image.
Also it's old enough to have no Get Sat Page.

Where is Lucille Ball?
Suggs: Jean Smart
Vivian Vance
You'll need to narrow you choices down because they only allow 35 options for a poll.

The poll is still under construction, ergo the 38 choices.

Lucille Ball is on part one:

Thank you. I still have some work to do, though; it's still kind of a mess. Hopefully I can get it together really soon.
