Crime TV-series are one of the most popular genres on TV. But it's not always the cop who catches the murderer.

Which series features the most creative sleuth (or team of sleuths) to solve the murder case?

great poll idea...love some of the choices..glad to see 'castle' on there, because beckett couldn't solve anything...she was the worst cop in the world...he was always the one who figured things out...

i would, however, remove columbo, because he was, in all sense, a cop (detective)...i would replace him with 'quincy', who was a medical examiner...also in that vein, 'crossing jordan' would work as well...

and one of my all-time favorite 'recent' shows, 'leverage', where it was criminals who figure out the crime...

but again...great poll...

Thanks for the feedback. You're absolutely right about Columbo. I couldn't get him out of my mind when making this poll, but in fact he's a cop so I removed him from the list. One that would qualify the description is an ex-cop or a retired cop. I know there are some good series about those, but I can't think of any right now. Do you happen to know one?

Regarding 'Quincy' and 'Crossing Jordan', don't these series fall in the same category as 'Forever'? Same for 'Leverage' and 'The Blacklist'. Would love to include them, but there should be a clear distinction, so it would be great if you could help me out here. Of course, in the case of 'Forever', the most important characteristic is that the guy is immortal. Maybe I can make a category for '"Immortal Man" and one for "Medical Examiner"?

having never seen 'forever' or 'the blacklist', i couldn't comment properly on either...

as far as ex-cops or retired cops go, the only one i can think of off the top of my head would be the great british series 'new tricks', which featured three retired cops heading up the ucos division (unsolved crimes)...

if i think of anymore, i'll let you know...

You're already using Castle for writer, but you could use "senior citizen" for JB Fletcher.

Sam and Dean Winchester, Supernatural - paranormal hunters
Joan Watson, Elementary - addiction specialist
Allison DuBois, Medium - psychic medium
Patrick Jane, The Mentalist - con man
Ned and Chuck, Lee Pace and Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies - pie maker and his girlfriend brought back from the dead
Encyclopedia Brown, Encyclopedia Brown - 5th grader
Hannibal Smith, Face, Murdock and BA Baracus, The A-Team - soldiers of fortune
Mick St. John, Moonlight - vampire
Ichabod Crane, Sleepy Hollow - Revolutionary War solider
Frank and Joe Hardy, The Hardy Boys - teenagers
Gary Hobson, Early Edition - stockbroker
Dr. Jacob Hood, Eleventh Hour - biophysicist
Dr. Mark Sloan, Diagnosis Murder - doctor
Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, Hart to Hart - self-made millionaire and his journalist wife
Perry Mason, Perry Mason - lawyer
Gus Guster, Psych - pharmaceutical salesman
Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald, Cracker, criminal psychologist

Wow Jen, quite impressive. This is almost a list of its own. I have added most of your suggestions to the list. A few, like Perry Mason and Matlock (both defense attorneys) are too similar so I left them out.

Thanks a lot for this contribution!!

Great idea for a poll and great list! From the list, I'd say Blacklist.

Mathematician, Numb3rs,

Good list. I was glad to see Endgame on the list. A perfect sub-genre for a poll.

I was just coming here to add another I thought of and the poll has gone live!

Maybe you'd consider adding and asking for a re-push?

Hi Jen, I was away for a couple of days. Good suggestion indeed. The only problem with doing a re-push is that it would come at the bottom, and my list is alphabetical. So that would look kind of strange.

Not sure it would be a good idea to include profilers or private detectives, they're the quintessential mystery solvers in literature, I was also surprised for CSI, don't they belong to the police force after all?
