Whenever we think about a posthumous Oscar win, the first name that comes in mind is obviously the legendary Heath Ledger for his impeccable performance from 'The Dark Knight'. But, some other artists were also awarded posthumously.

Among these, which is the saddest exit for you?

The intro made me think you'd remove Ledger to give the others a chance, especially since many of these performers aren't on the same level of fame and since you're asking about the saddest exit, what can be sadder than a 28-year old actor with a promising, father of a little girl, dying right after giving the performance of a lifetime.

How about making a poll about posthumous nominations, so that James Dean is included?

What about asking which is the saddest exit and excluding Heath Ledger?

I immediately had the same thought, that this is going to be a landslide, if it were to go live. But, if you were to broaden the scope to include Posthumous Oscar Nominees, James Dean two posthumous nominations might make it interesting.

1956 Nominated East of Eden (1955)
Oscar Best Actor in a Leading Role
This was the first posthumous acting nomination in Academy Awards history.

1957 Nominated Giant (1956)
Oscar Best Actor in a Leading Role
This was James Dean's second consecutive posthumous nomination.

I don't think changing it by removing the option, poll takers want to vote for addresses the issue. Poll takers choose what they know and choose safe, popular options. If Heath Ledger were excluded, Howard Ashman would likely win, as a lot was made of his posthumous nomination. Plus, he died relatively young @ 40 years old making his death more tragic.

Walt Disney was always nominated every year, often with multiple nominations, so a posthumous nomination was to be expected. Peter Finch and Sam Zimbalist as somewhat known individuals who died in their late 50's and early 60's might get a smattering of support from older poll takers. Everyone else listed would likely get only a handful or minimal percentage of the vote and are not viable options.

I think the saddest aspect would be a function of three factors: how young they died, how tragic were the circumstances of their death and their popularity. Any question about posthumous Oscar nominees or winners, will always be a three way race between the three young and premature deaths of Ledger's drug overdose, Ashman's HIV-related death and Dean's car accident.
